Night out in Plymouth
Discussion
Not been to the one in Plymouth but Reflex bars are usually a good night out - 80's music but a good mix and lots of danceable/sing along tunes plus reasonable price drinks and usually a good mix of age groups
http://www.reflexplymouth.co.uk/
ETA for a group that size you can book a VIP booth for free so you have somewhere to sit - its not as grand as it sounds, usually just a reserved seating area for your group.

Annabelle's on the Barbican is one of the better places.
Unfortunately with Plymouth as it has such a massive student population pretty much all of North Hill / Mutley is studenty (if that's a word). The bars are quite nice though.
And because all of the pubs on the Barbican close early (noise restrictions) the only club left is Oceana. Sad times really cuz growing up there 10-15 years ago there were many more places to go. this may or may not be looking through rose tinted glasses!
Oh, avoid Jesters. Seriously.

I found myself in Plymouth a few years ago and took the mrs to a nice(ish) restaurant in the city centre, near the harbour. The view out the window was very pleasant across a cobbled road and over the boats. As the night drew in the ambience imporved as the street lighting was quite mellow and shone a lowly orange tinge across the water.
What I didn't realise is that gone 10pm in Plymouth, it seems that phone boxes become defunct and are used by student types to nip in to for sexual gratification. At one point there were a couple in the phone box (hand job) while a different couple leant against the side (fingering). Quite a spectacle.
About midnight there was some sort of commotion outside and two policeman ran past the restaurant, both looking over their shoulders. They were in a hurry. About 30 seconds later a shirtless man with a bloodied torso came round the corner at pace. It became clear the police were running for their lives.
I've done a little googling and the restaurant was Quay 33. I would recommend it as the food, service and wine list was actually very good. Outside was certainly very busy.
I have also taken the time to circle the window where my view was from, the phone boxes and direction of the hunger games route. See below.

Mayflower steps are not far from there, as well as Cap'n Jaspers - both historically significant as each other.
The bar in the plymouth gin distillery was the only bar I could find, or that the locals knew of that wasn't an utter sh*t hole.

If you want a bit higher end then look at Royal William Yard. A bit outside the city centre but it's a higher end development of bars/restaurants and apartments around a harbour.

I can't offer much recent advice, but in 1990-94 my girlfriend at the time was at Poly South West (who in the early 90's did a mighty fine "PSW, the Ultimate Drinking Machine" t-shirt, until BMW set their lawyers onto them - poor form).
Back in those days Union St was always the lively part of town in terms of it being pub-alley.
Try not to get your head kicked-in by drunken sailors.

How would you say the standard of bar/pub in Plymouth compares to the Purple Turtle?Back in those days Union St was always the lively part of town in terms of it being pub-alley.

Just had a look at it on Google Maps. Hmmm, best avoided nowadays given the OP's 'more high end' requirements.

although the new Cap'n Js isn't a patch on the old one.OP if you visit Cap'n Jaspers (and if you are in PLymouth it would be criminal not to) tell the waitress that yours is a half-yard. She will never have heard that before Jasperizer burger is also great.
Sadly Plymouth is a shadow of it's former self when it comes to nightlife.
IIRC (and I am dating myself here!) the warehouse/dance academy is no more. Back in the day a bit of Ritzy's/Powerhouse & then on to Jesters was always a good time. I would still recommend Jesters for a night out, just watch out for the Swills. I've not been to Annabel's but have heard it's a good night out. Be careful of any really tall women, you may bump into my brother in tranny mode.

That my friend is brilliant! The description and the photo made me laugh out load. Bread and Roses pub is a good start, it's social enterprise-y place so gets a right mix of clients - students, crazy 60 year old grannies, hippies, hipsters and me.
Great choice in beer, bottles, cider and mixers. Plus often has some esoteric tunes going on.
Can you tell it's my local? Hell I used to go there even when it was 4 times further than my local.

Thought I'd post this in here first.
Looking for suggestions of places to go on a night out in Plymouth...
Group of 20 or so guys all late 20's to early 40's. Looking at the higher end stuff and less the student type stuff.
Cheers

You should head North on Armada Way, under North Cross roundabout, down towards pennycomequick, hang a right, and get on a train to Exeter. And I've lived in Plymouth 12 years.Looking for suggestions of places to go on a night out in Plymouth...

In all seriousness, anywhere not studenty is quite likely to be rough, especially if you want a late night. And a group of 20 or so lads/men will definately not get in at least half the places unless you go in much smaller groups.
Slightly out of town and upmarket is Royal William Yard , mainly franchise and chain eateries, but make sure you get a taxi back. Also there are a couple of casinos in the West end of the centre.
Do you want food, beer, late licence, or gentlemens' entertainment?
