Hello all,

Considering a move to Bridgwater (relocating for work in Bristol and Exeter). Looking to rent.

What's the town like? Any PHers live nearby?

I know Devon and Exmoor well, but not this area.

Thanks.

Youd have better luck in the south coast forum, no doubt.

Since when has Bridgewater been on the south coast? biggrin
Op You can find a lot nicer places than Bridgewater in between Bristol and Exeter wink

I would avoid Bridgwater, not the nicest place to live, it maybe close to the M5 but traffic at rush hour can make access to M5 very difficult.
Have a look at Burnham On Sea, small town with better motorway access, much nicer place to live but can be busy at weekends in the summer.

If you work in Bristol and Exeter, I'd personally move to one or other. Bridgwater and Taunton (more so with the former) aren't exactly beacons of civilisation.

Friends of mine have just moved to Exeter and really like it. I think Bristol is also a great place to live.

Work out which one you're likely to inhabit more and consider moving there. On the flip side, somewhere in the country is easily doable- Cullompton or similar are very close to the motorway and very nice.

As others have said , Bridgewater is not the nicest of places. Well my opinion so others may vary. I live in between Yeovil and Taunton, there are some nice villages around this way and about a 10-15 minute drive to the M5. I would definitely look around that way.

I find Bridgwater to be hideously grim and often overwhelmed with traffic. There are a ton of much more pleasant places within a small radius.

It's a absolute dump. 75% council houses, the rest are ok. Crap constantly busy roads, deprived town centre, people are mostly thick and have 4 kids by 25.

Avoid. There's much nicer places around Taunton, when I used to go to college in bridgwater it took me 45 mins to get from the col to the motorway ( about 3 miles ) in stop start traffic.

Why not somewhere in Devon like honiton?

Have to agree. Avoid.

Taunton is nice
Honiton yep
Collumpton
Wellington area, but I don't know it
Weston Super Mare is only an hour from Exeter. Bad traffic at rush hour tho.

Thanks for the replies.

Bridgewater is out then hehe

I have to be about half way between Bristol and Exeter. Honiton is too far ( I do 12 hour shifts and I couldn't face 1+ hour drive either end of the day). The shifts do mean I do miss most of the rush hour traffic.

I spent 5 years living in the area, and still visit friends down there a lot, Bridgwater is a dump, at least the old cellophane factory has gone (no more stink bomb smell!) but there a loads of lovely villages a few miles out, Puriton, Woolavington, Cossington, Moorlinch, Chilten Polden, all about 10-15 minutes from J23 M5

most of these replies are from out of date people, Bridgwater has reinvented itself over the last 5 years and the investment for Hinckly is showing ten fold. North Petherton gives you good access to junction 24 and flexibility to go to Taunton or Bridgwater. none of these areas are metropolis, when you are not using it as a dormitory what do you want from your surroundings. Avoid needing to use junction 25 at any normal hour.

No, I'm fairly confident to assert that Bridgwater remains a sthole with some flat-pack Barratt estates tacked onto the marshy fringes.

Certainly was this evening.

The A37 and A303 is a much nicer route than the M5 for Exeter to Bristol so I'd look at a village along this route.

I will second or third or whatever about Bridgwater, really not where I would choose in the area at all. I can't really think of anything to recommend it over anywhere else to be honest. I have family living there and I can only rate it as Ok at best. I think it is better than it was, but still the last place I'd choose within the geographic area you've specified.

I live in a village about 2-3 miles from Burnham-on-Sea and I love it around here. I find people are friendly and I have a great social life. It can get busy during summer months but that's mostly just the town centre during the day, when the holiday makers go window shopping etc. Many of the holiday makers stay in Brean, especially at night, which is rammed most of the summer, but Burnham itself is usually only reasonably busy.

Each to his own, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else now. I have a 62 mile each way commute which I've been doing for the past 13 years, because I didn't want to move away. I also work shifts, so I often avoid the worst commuting times.
