As far as I am aware, they have not yet been switched back on. The Police Chief has asked for the money and the Mayor has said he will find it.
On the letters page it is the usual entrenched war of words. There is a balance to be found but the Mayor seems to want cyclists to become special cases. When I was speaking with a rabid cyclist, he told me they want nothing less than seperate free cycle ways around the city, away from cars and pedestrians as when they are cycling fast they don'e want to have doris in their way. When I asked him how this should be paid for, it was by taxing motorists even more to fund them.
The Mayor and Bristol CC are so anti car they will destroy business in the City and as some of the replies to the article said, he got less than 10% of the vote yet was victorius. Another respondant said motorists need a championing group to fight for their wants and needs, but there are none.

Heh.

Well, i'm a driver first an cyclist second for the time being. But if i had to work in the centre again i wouldn't drive, it takes too long just sitting still in traffic.

I despise riding on the roads, i avoid it at all costs and it's not so hard due to the cycle paths/tails around Bristol. I sympathise with motorists, i know full well cyclists are easily obscured from view and cycleways are the way forward.

Would i pay a small fee to have more of them developed? yeah probably! I think cyclists should be accounted for in the same way as car drivers, ID plate, insurance etc... albeit mostly because of the bad examples we all know about.
