Nice hotels in Exeter?
Discussion
Hi
I'm looking for a nice hotel in Exeter as a surprise break for me and SWMBO.
I'm only an hour or so away in Bristol but I've never actually been to Exeter (except the trading estate where the Ferrari dealer is) so I thought it may be nice to have a (child free) weekend away.
Mid to late September is my plan so if anyone can recommend a nice place to stay I'd be most grateful.
Thanks very much......
Mark

Magdalen Chapter (http://www.themagdalenchapter.com/) is very nice, with limited parking or as above, Abode with Michael Caines' restaurant in Cathedral Yard. The only problem with that one is that it doesn't have any parking as far as I know!

I've heard good things about Southernhay House. Plenty of parking neaby and about a 2 minute walk from the city centre.

I think they've been covered if you want City Centre.
Southgate (now a Mercure hotel). There's also a Mercure deal 2 nights B&B plus meal on first night for £170 or something ridiculously cheap on their "love autumn" deal (select your hotel, make a booking, and then there's a box to enter "lovaut" as the promo code, not intuitive but a cheap weekend away). And they have a good car park.
The Rougemont was very faded glory when we looked, and is near the central train station.
Abode is in the Cathedral yard which is a fabulous location, but no parking. I wouldn't call the Caines place much of an advantage as its biggest benefit is the lack of decent local competition compared to Plymouth. I've been on the odd occasion, but felt it was trading on the name rather than the food.
Out of town slightly is the Buckerell Lodge, again a big wedding place and so maybe busy at weekends, and similar standard to a Mercure.
Also slightly out is the Devon Motel, not very posh, but just a few hundred yards from Carrs and Grange car dealers
The Magdalene chapter has reinvented itself several times over the last few years, used to be Hotel Barcelona, then became leased rooms for businesses, and now an upmarket hotel again. Also has some parking on site. I've not been since the revamp, but it has a good reputation.
St Olaves is another more unusual upmarket place, again never stayed but the restaurant is supposed to be very good.
For me it would be this or The Magdalene.
The White Hart is a pub with B&B, very very old and loads of "character". Food and beer is OK (better end of pub grub), but again I've not stayed there as I can walk home in 30 mins.
'Nightlife' in exeter is variable, the students will be returning in late Sept. During the day there is the Cathedral to wander around, the Royal Albert Memorial museum which I never tire of popping into, and the Catacombs, which are claustrophobic, and pretty dull TBH. The Quay is also a fairly lively area.
Cathedral area has interesting indy restaurants as well as chain eateries, there was (probably still is) a quirky Moroccan (Al Farid) in the corner that we used to go to.

Well, just got back from our weekend away in Exeter and I chose Abode.
Fantastic location, and great breakfast too!
Our room overlooked the cathedral green which was great and we both thought the whole place was really nice.
Parking was not a problem as they have a deal with the local multi storey and you can drive right up to the front of house to drop bags off etc.
We had a great time, as everything we needed was within walking distance.
Ended up visiting local shops, cinema and a couple of restaurants during our stay and even the sun made an appearance on both days!
Thanks for all the recommendations and I would definitely say Exeter makes a nice place to visit for a city break.
