On the M5 and M4 interchange between Cribbs and Bath.

Not sure what type they are? Just noticed the markings on the road over the last week or so.

It looks like some boxes have gone up on the gantries behind the signs as well recently, so not sure when they'll be active.

Thought it would be worth a heads up for those that don't drive it every day. The cameras are hidden behind the signs on the gantries, and the road markings aren't obvious until you're on them.

This'll be the 'managed motorway system' that's been the subject of the roadworks for months.
Variable speed limits monitored by cameras in the gantries - pretty common elsewhere.

Has anyone actually achieved the speed limit there in the last decade?

You only get done when a variable speed limit is displayed

Apart from the M25 as they haven't been switched for an age !

Yeah, the setup looked familiar to what I'd seen on the M25, so guessed they'd be there to enforce the variable limits.

I wonder how often they'll lower the limit for no reason just to catch people out.

There's been loads of times when joining the M4 at the Bath junction and the sign at the slip road says 40mph, then you get on the motorway and everything is fine and traffic is flowing as normal. I think those ones are just advisory, though?

£77m cost according to the Highways Agency website!! Wonder if it'll be worth it.

Managed motorways, if used correctly would be wonderful.
You could have a much higher limit when traffic is light and free flowing.
Then when traffic is average the 70mph limit could be introduced and enforced.
Then when there is an accident of debris in the carriageway they could reduce it further still.

I believe this is what they do on Germany's autobahns. Except you can go as fast as you like when nothing is displayed on the gantry. (As im sure you know) driving

Anyone noticed any differences on their commute?

I don't travel during the busy rush hour, so it's not made much difference for me.

I've noticed that there aren't cameras behind each sign, but there's still markings on the road.

Also, driving the other day, goin eastbound and noticed a flash on the opposite side. Seemed strange, as none of the cars looked like they were going particularly fast, then check in my mirrors and there was no limit displayed at all on the sign.

Also seen them flash once before, but this time I was maybe 5-6 cars back, but again, no cars were going quick or faster than the limit.

Makes me wonder if they'll ever catch you even if there is no temporary limit!

Also seen these flash on several occasions, one when it was a 50 and one where there were no speed warning so must have been 70. Super bright flashes. The ones in Germany flash bright red in you face, nice and safe.

Cameras seem to be positioned over both carriageways on the same gantry. So a quick glance onto the gantry above the opposite carriageway should tell you whether or not cameras are fitted to your side of the gantry.

Would be interested to see if anyone else checks this and can confirm or otherwise.

Completely forgot to check on my way home last night. Will have a look in the morning.

Seems a bit strange! Flashing even when no speed is displayed. Might have to slow it right down through that section from now on.

I saw one flash on the opposite carriage way on Sunday when there was no speed displayed on the sign. Safe then to assume that these are active whatever the limit?

Similar system on the M42 seems to work (mostly). Cameras on M42 only flash when signs are active as far as I can tell. Cameras are on opposite gantries on the M42 but not on the more recent schemes on M6 at Birmingham or the M1 at Nottingham so don't assume.

I came back down from MK a week or so back, hit the M4 at Swindon about 16:30 and thought it would be the usual nightmare arriving around Bristol 17:00 or so.

Surprisingly we cruised past Brizzle with barely a slowing, apart from when we hit the back of the queue for the Gordano exit.

I suppose people are arriving there quicker now and so the queue is longer.

There are still people around who haven't noticed the 50mph roadworks have gone from the M4/M5 junction....

Best wishes, Colin
