Hi folks

I have booked a night in 'the best B&B in the UK'[as seen on Points West] in Bath in a couple of weeks for myself and MrsO. We plan to have a bimble down to Bradford on Avon in the morning for a look around/coffee and then meander up to Bath for the night.

I havent been pubbing in Bath for yonks (I used to go to the Rec to watch the odd match or two back in the day) so am after a recommendation on a nice pub or two and a nice curry house.

My definitions of the above:-

"Nice pub" - decent proper beer (not Euro-fizz); seating; no loud music; not stupid prices; decent bog for the Mrs smile
"Nice curry house" - 'normal' menu not the modern fusion malarky; decent grub; decent price; non sticky carpets; decent bog for the Mrs smile

oh...and not too far to walk between said pubs and curry house

Any suggestions team?

Cheers smile

1. The Raven....proper pub, not checked the ladies loo but blokes one is fine. Just off Queen Square.

2. Eastern Eye.....just around the corner from above, classy, lots of awards, loos as above.

Hope that helps!

Both good suggestions.

Alternatives
1. The Star, London Road - Victorian settles in small pub that is excellent for ales. About 500yds from Raven (who do a fabulous pie, it must be said wink )
2. Other curry ideas: Pria or Rajpoot (Pulteney Street - Rajpoot is dressier , in basement below Pria); Jamuna (corner of High St - nice view over Abbey); Bengal Brasserie (top of Milsom street - cheap, undressy but excellent food); and my favourite for something different and excellent - Yak Yeti Yak on Manvers Street - a lovely family-run restaurant serving Nepali food, gentle curries that sit lightly and have you leave feeling like you've inhaled a meadow.

If if you want other ideas for curry houses I can supply them!

Only help in 1, but The Salamander on John St is nice, is a Bath Ale pub so its got the whole range, pretty small but cosy, upstairs for eating I think, not sure on the loos though but I'd say pretty good by the rest of the place.

Pub suggestions are good; Salamander and Raven are very close to each other and very central. If they are a little too "pub" for the wife then Hall and Woodhouse just up the road is "nicer" but I like it less. Another good beer pub is The Griffin and a bit further out, The Hop Pole.

For a curry I prefer Jamuna near the Abbey.

hehe I agree, Firehouse Rotisserie is good for steak. Not so hot for curry though.

The Hop Pole is like a bigger Salamander really, both owned by Bath Ales, its probably a bit nicer but not as cosy/local feeling.

Thanks smile

By the sound of it I guess my thread would have been easier if I said "What pubs and curry house should I avoid?" rather than the other way around hehe

There seems to be a nice list of both all close together so hopefully we should manage to find our way into something nice smile

Hi folks

Had our night in Bath last night.

On the advice given here we had a few pints in The Raven (nice pub; good beer; friendly service) and a curry in The Eastern Eye. Found the EE to be expensive for what it was but a great room for a curry; nice enough food; very efficient service...and the Mrs advised that the bogs were very clean etc smile

Cheers all thumbup

I was in the Raven with a few friends on Tuesday evening. Sitting upstairs from about 7 till 10 I think. We had intended to have a pie, but the kitchen was closed that day...

I believe we may have been relatively loud and uncouth: apologies.

Small world smile

We were sat downstairs, near the bar, opposite the entry door (to the right-ish as you came in). We didnt hear any untoward behaviour hehe and probably left at around 7.30-ish.

We heard about 10 couples asking for food. Apparantly it was the staff Xmas Party hence no food on!

It's a good pub, have only just discovered it after over 4 years...

Nice ales, nothing spectacular, but a good range of pleasant stuff, and a good atmosphere.
