Wondering if anyone in the SW (as close to melksham as possible ideally) has a van type cherry picker available to borrow / hire today.

It's needed to allow a chimney chap access to our chimney in order to fit a cap so that we can use our new fireplace at Christmas.

Obviously happy to pay a reasonable fee / expenses

Why do you need the cap fitted to enable you to use the fire over christmas?

I'm sure a week or 2 of use without one shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I've no idea, apparently that's what the chimney chap has said

Missed the boat now I guess, but FBS Flues at Warminster (Upton Scudamore) have one.

Is it an open fire or a wood burner?

Either way it will be fine to use for a week or 2 with no cowl.

Can you not put a ridge ladder up?

Also, I don't believe the cowl is needed as such, it's just better to have one.

This ^^^
A cowl basically is there just to stop the rain entering the pot or to stop birds nesting in the pot, had an open fire here in Saleen towers with no cowl for 15 years with no problems, have one fitted now as the chimney has been lined for our wood burner and the cowl has reduced the draw of the chimney so makes the fire more efficient.
