Commercial entity not commercially viable, so will close shocker!

When was the last time you took a commercial flight out of Filton? (I looked at doing it a while back as I was workin gin Brissle and Inverness, but it was cheaper to route elsewhere and get the train)

So are all the BAE staff who fly to Toulouse going to have to travel to Lulsgate?

The Post Office used to fly in and out too didn't they?

Knowing that land has huge value for housing etc you'll have to excuse my cynical head on this wink

Article mentions the air ambulance but plod will still be there too thank goodness. Some daft idea was to base them at Corsham rolleyes

Now if we could organise a sprint on the airfield before it's demolished, that'd be great!

In aid of charity like the Wallace and Gromit Appeal(Children's Hospital)...

Perhaps one last display from the local Spitfire (or has it already gone?)

I'm up for that, maybe a static show as well. Be good to do it for the W & G Appeal, just in time for Xmas.

The Spitfire is, I am led to believe, staying at Filton until early December after which she will be flown to her new home at Staverton.

No surprise that Filton is being closed - the lure of a big fat cheque from the property developers is too much to resist isn't it?

It's a great shame that Filton will go - another piece of the UK's aviation history soon to be lost forever.

What, I wonder, will happen to the Concorde that currently lives at Filton? She would be welcome I would imagine up here in Gloucester as the star exhibit at our forthcoming Jet Age Musuem.

Because it is yet another piece of our industrial / technological heritage disappearing under the bulldozer to make way for yet another housing estate. A use for it should be found that keeps key elements intact.

Not to mention more chuffing traffic that Filton cannot handle now let alone on completion of more estates.

So you guys:-

a) use Filton regularly and

b) live somewhere other than a house?

If the answer is yes to both questions then I can see why you seem so upset - otherwise confused

I am trying to arrange something but am waiting to hear if the site managers will agree to it or not. I'm happy to suggest some other ideas if the current one is rejected, so if you have any ideas can you send me a pm and I'll look into it.

Add in Queens Square Classics, Santa Cruise VW and that could be quite a static show. Not sure whether site insurance will cover it but they do shows for families and employees of Airbus. Perhaps a fly past of the A380 as well.

I doubt we'll get it this side of Christmas as it will still be classified as a working airfield, but possibly early next year.

ADC and Brabazon Motors (maybe also Bristol Cars due to historical links!) involvement would be useful.

Starting to feel a bit like the hospice event...there's also the Air Ambulance based there.

As Sandy says, once it's decommissioned and before they dig it up would be ideal smile

If you're planning some motorsport, then either a sprint or an autosolo would be a good bet. I'm sure Bristol Motor Club could help with running either, but we're probably too late for this year. Once it's closed and before the developers get in there is the best bet. If there's an event, I'll enter it...

We've submitted a few ideas for them to consider, so we'll just wait and see if we can get the go-ahead or not.

I've tried on and off for years trying to get them to agree to something, but have always been rejected as it's a working airfield. Would be a shame not to make use of it before it gets turned into housing or what ever they now have planned for it.

The problem lies with Bradley Stoke estate, which should never have been built. Filton could/should have been the major regional airport and transport hub:

1 It's literally right on a railway line.

2 It's right next to the M5 and M4.

3 It has one of the longest runways in the country.

4 Aircraft would be taking off (into the prevailing wind) over the Severn Estuary.

etc.

Instead, the local authority deemed it more sensible to develop Lulsgate which:

1 Is on top of a hill, in a location chosen for the training of pilots in landing in foggy/difficult conditions

2 Is miles away from any railway line

3 Is miles away from any motorway

4 Is miles away from Bristol

5 Cannot be extended.

Brett has a point, none of the above answers the question he posted .

One doesn't have to personally use something regularly to appreciate its importance or hope that it not be torn down.

I've never been to Stonehenge and I shop at Sainsburys. I wouldn't like to see Stonehenge torn down to make way for a Sainsburys.
