Bristol's newly elected Mayor; George Ferguson is pushing ideas about closing Bristol city centre to cars on Sundays. He has said that it works well in places like Bordeaux so why can't it work in Bristol? He wants to open up the streets to pedestrians and cyclists. Discuss...

I can't remamber the last time I drove in to central Bristol. Forcing myself through the congestion and then paying a fortune to park is not my idea of a good time.

If I happen to want to go to the central area, I park up somewhere around Midland Road and leg it the rest of the way.

Mind you, I always was a skinflint smile

It's not every Sunday. Just proposing the first Sunday of the month.

And he's already brought in free parking on Sunday. Which'll put a stop to the comical standoff with the parking jobsworths at the QS meeting

So there'll be free parking but we won't be allowed in. Great joined up thinking!

I think slowly Bristol are getting the realisation that they have some fkwits in thier now renamed "city hall". They have also shelved the plans for work place parking leveies which was their previous big idea. The City needs Broadmead for the shops so just which bit would they want to screw up.

One Sunday a month and quite possibly only summer. I'd be amazed if they shut off access to too much of the area. He seems to be a bit too switched on to make a complete mess.

Now if he shelves the planned city wide 20mph limit I'll be really pleased smile

I reckon the area around the centre (hippodrome), Baldwin St, Welsh Back, Queen Sq, Prince Street would be the target. Don't hit the main retail area, but encourage all the walkie and cycle types to hit the cafe and eatery areas smile

^^ This, and I agree with the poster above, I dont think GF is mental enough to try to destroy peoples trade. He wants people in the NCPs or parking away from town and wandering in, then toodling around the shops. Good Idea. ( in my book)

that sort of area could work well, there are a few cafes and things in the area and more importantly, very few bus routes so Farce Group wont throw their toys out of the pram. hopefully it will help encourage people to spend time in the area around the lloyds ampitheatre and the harbourside which suffers from all the traffic penning it in, towards hotwells, through the centre, up park st etc etc

i wouldnt be cycling though, those cobbles outside the hippordrome are covered in kebab fat and are lethal!

living just a stones throw within south glos is great, all the benefits of being close to Bristol but no effect from this mayoral nonsense!

Does the park and ride open on a Sunday? The one at Lansdown for Bath doesn't smile
