Help to buy an ML in South West area ?
Discussion
A long shot...
I love cars, useless understanding them !
Now need to change, and looking for an ML, 2008/9 vintage, low mileage, nice spec.
Living west of Minehead, so happy to look in the Bristol / Exeter catchment area. BUT....anyone interested in helping me source a car ? Happy to pay reasonable fee, to help me stand more chance of getting a nice one. Not familiar at all with the marque, BMW fan normally - but don't like the X5 simply.
Thanks, Big Ant

Always happy to talk about cars (that's why we're all on PH after all!!).
What sort of budget are you looking at?
Petrol or Diesel?
Any specific requirements on options?
Colour?
Feel free to PM if you'd rather keep the answers out of the public domain.
I've always found that you're best getting a shortlist from advertised cars, seeing them all in a short timeframe (same day ideally) to compare. Always sleep on a decision and then negotiate the salesman's pants down!

Hi StubbyPete !
OK, so looking at Autotrader and Pistonheads.....seems that best I can expect is:
2008/2009 age
30-45k miles
Upto 22k cash
Sport trim looks nice inside/out.
What I don't know is this model - its weaknesses, issues, etc. Whether one engine is OK, another not, etc.
I probably think of the 320CDi, as I am used to running BMW 530d and 330Ci, so prefer not to labour too much, although realise shifting an ML around will be different, but I think I need something for Exmoor / Quantock living....wet, mud, rain....
Cheers, BA

surely if you are looking at a £25k car £22k cash + charm and the dealer generosity = about that always liked the ml but only one for me 63 amg
how about http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-ML320-4x4-Sport... and save a bit?
freind of mine has one as a family workhorse and proves reliable.

Petrol or Diseasel?
Petrols are thirsty but quiet as a mouse when running. The diseasel is fine from inside the cabin but any oil burner is a bit noisey from outside.
Personally, I'd go for the diseasel (don't tell any Phers!), the extra torque really makes large heavy cars easier to live with on a day by day basis.
320 or 420?
No competition on performance, over 2s quicker to 60 for less than 10% fuel economy.
If running costs aren't important, ML63, no other petrol worth looking at.
Options?
Not many issues but I'd avoid anything that would cost to repair, i.e. air suspension. Glass roof is a nice and common option but you may prefer steel above your head, most other things are standard (clinate, decent sound system etc).
Plenty for you to think about there but if you fancy petrol, a full size Range Rover would get my vote.

Be warned - a friend got an ML320 CDi at the same time I bought my 3.0d X3. He was horrified by the fuel consumption, in real life it's nothing like the mfrs figures and he struggled to break 25mpg, on some occasions it was under 20mpg.
His may have been a bad one but the dealer couldn't find anything.
