Bristol stag do - bar/restaurant advice sought
Discussion
Arranging a stag do in Bristol in October. Reasonably sophisticated is the target. Decent beer and interesting places preferred. 30 something professionals in the main.
Any suggested bars/pubs/restaurants?
So far I've been pointed in the direction of Tikka Flame as a reasonable Indian in the center and then Park Street in general (Java Cocktail bar?).
Oceana has been suggested for a club, I suspect sophisticated does not feature in its description but I need a club suggestion ready if people want it on the night. Is it a complete cattle market? Anywhere else with some degree of class?
Thanks in advance.

Never really had a bad night out on the Triangle (Top of Park Street). Most of the clubs get really busy with students, but they're not too bad. Oceana's not too bad if there's a big group of you, as there's all the different rooms to move around, but expect it to be full of tossers any night of the week.
Wouldn't really class any of the clubs in Bristol as sophisticated. There's some nice bars in and around Clifton Village.
Can't really comment on food, as I don't eat out that much, but the last place I had a meal out in town was the Cow Shed on Whiteleadies Road. Was really nice, bit expensive, but was worth it.

Thanks, Clifton reasonable walking distance from park street etc?Wouldn't really class any of the clubs in Bristol as sophisticated. There's some nice bars in and around Clifton Village.

On Park Street, The Ram has live music (my chum plays in a band there at weekends).
Goldbrick House has a champagne bar etc. Then at the top there's Haha and Browns plus various places on the Triangle.
Clifton Village is about a mile up the road but you can easily head to Racks, Clifton Wine Bar and Channings Hotel, a stone's throw from the Triangle.
Pop yourself a google map and do some plotting.
If you head up into Clifton Village then there's a multitude of pubs, some bars and plenty of decent places to eat (The Albion is a full on gastro pub). It's chav free zone, some students (lots of pretty female ones seem to attend Bristol ) and not the sort of place the TSG vans park up ready for a rumble!
If you can get a male group in then La Rocca on the Triangle is a local fave for a good night, and Luna up by Clifton Wine Bar is quite fun too. Oceana is a bit of a meat fest and one of the few places which will welcome all male parties (I work in that line of business!).

Your thread seems to confirm what I feared about Oceana, and that Clifton is the place. Thanks. And as for how snobby... I'm pretty snobby if I'm totally honest!http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

As I pretty much said in Blade's thread a while ago, the main centre of town is where the young'uns tend to hang out, although saying that you can avoid them if you make the effort. I still like going to Vodka Revs, Slug and Lettuce (as they play house music) etc, but they do get busy.
The harbour front is, imo awful on a night out, cheap venues attract big crowds and I just feel uncomfortable down there.
Park Street, White Ladies road and Clifton has a nice mix of bars and clubs that should please most people, you'd have to be extremely fussy to not find anywhere that you like as there are so many to choose from.
Java is a very small venue that has a small front bar, small dance room and small VIP area, I wouldn't describe it as a cocktail bar due to its limited seating. Although they do host themed cocktail nights and often have accoustic performers in the front area. The dance room is commercial / r 'n' b music.
If there are any cider drinkers in your group, or any that like to think they are, check out the Coronation Tap.
For a nice sunset drink if the weather is good, head to the Avon Gorge hotel for it's lovely balcony bar overlooking Avon gorge and the Clifton suspension bridge, it will be busy though if the sun is out.
Illusions is again, a busy but entertaining bar, with live magicians to entertain you whilst you enjoy a drink or two.
Could also be worth checking out the Zero Degrees micro brewery, the food is meant to be pretty good and you can sample their brews
Bristol also has a massively eclectic music scene if that's your thing, ranging from the uoompah music of the Bierkeller to the warehouse club scene at Motion.
I rarely venture into town for food, so someone else will have to advise on that.

You won't like Bristol.
I was being a little flippant, and I hope I do. I'm a Bradford lad, who grew up clubbing there and Leeds, it isn't exactly Kensington! These days I prefer nice pubs with decent beer or posh bars where I can get a seat, I'm getting old rather than snobby perhaps.Matt_N said:

Thanks. Everyone seems to be confirming my thoughts that the Oceana area is not mine or, more importantly, the stag's type of thing.Park Street, White Ladies road and Clifton has a nice mix of bars and clubs that should please most people, you'd have to be extremely fussy to not find anywhere that you like as there are so many to choose from....

+1 on Zero Degrees. Been there plenty of times and it's only a short hop to The Triangle.
Sevo are you organising a daytime stag activity of some sort too?
Saturday daytime we're going paintballing out near Bristol Airport. Its a big commercial one, but without knowing the area probably the safest bet. Sunday will be chilled, possibly a country pub lunch, suggestions welcome there too come to think of it (I'm going to flick through the good pub guide).Sevo are you organising a daytime stag activity of some sort too?
Plan now may be Zero Degrees and then up towards Clifton. And stay away from the Harbour.
Cheers for all the advice guys, any more is still welcome.

Local PHers should know decent country pubs! When you've used the guide bung up a few name so here for feedback
I organised a stag in Bristol a while back too. Anywhere in Clifton you WILL need to arrange entry in advance - so get on it. Otherwise they won't let large male groups in. Can highly recommend Racks - they set aside an area/room for you and it's a great bar to start in before heading to the triangle.
I was bestman at my brothers. We walked up the big hill to the 'nicer' bars at the top of the hill. Found very little choice of places, expensive, but very nice. It was the kind of place I'd go with the wife, didn't fit for a stag do in the slightest. Waterfront was a much younger crowd, but was exactly what we needed. Lots of people, music and a good laugh.
Sitting in a private area in a bar, or quiet cocktail bar wouldn't be my choice on any stag do, but then everyone's different.
And we were all mid 20s, early 30s.
