Thinking of moving to Exeter - good and bad bits of town?
Discussion
I used to live down on the quay in Exeter, my girlfriend (now Wife) and I then moved to Newton St Cyres which is just a short commute.
As has been suggested, Heavitree would probably be my choice if I were to move back. It's an ok city, more like a big town really. Has its problems like any other town/city and I think there is a fair divide in the wealth of people there

St Leonards is nice, old Georgian, Victorian & Edwardian houses aplenty. We lived there for 4 years - nice area.
Exeter is a great place, loads to do, good pubs and restaurants.
Spend a weekend there to suss it out, traffic can be bad if you have to get across the city at rush hour though.

Im posting as this thread makes it sound poor. Compared to Plymouth, Exeter is fabulous. Culture, cathedral, great restaurants, good shops, nice people, a university city......does mean lots of grubby hoodies on a saturday !
I'm looking to move once I have sold up, Exeter is my target area but maybe a village nearby.
Oh and of course, superb schools.

Exeter is a very alright place to live, there is a new development called cranbrook that is going up near exeter, that has plenty of choice for a new build's.
I like living in Exeter it is a good place, sure there are always a few negatives as with anywhere, but I can not think of any. oh yeah Traffic, I have good access to the M5 now but where I used to live was called Alphington, traffic at rush hour not so good.

I have worked in Exeter for 25 years, living just outside. It's a great City with a good atmosphere and a vibrant business community. Pennsylvania and The Quay area are definitely the best areas to live if you want to be in the City, but many nice villages around it if you are happy for a 15 minute commute.
apart from the M5/A30 roadworks, i dont think traffic is generally too bad around Exeter
avoid whipton, wonford and pinhoe. avoid burnthouse lane (wonford area) like the plague (the name tells you all you need to know about it really!) pennsylvania and exwick is okay. i'd also say live out towards woodbury/lympstone, also being biased

Exwick, really?
I lived there from 94 to 03. It was my first house, was cheap and did me well at the time. I guess it was ok at the time, but I've moved on and it's not an area I'd move back to. I would agree with what has already been said about areas to avoid. I also think parts of St.Thomas are not the best.Bump, just searched and found this thread.
We have been talking about relocation of our business and several families to this part of the world.
Ideally we need a "fixer" to help and facilitate the process, happy to pay for the service for the right advice.
We could also bring around 30+ jobs to the area so I did thing about contacting the local council for advice.
Any thoughts or assistance much appreciated, thanks!

Can't help Re: a fixer, what sort of premises would you be looking for? We have been talking about relocation of our business and several families to this part of the world.

Exeter is a boom town at the moment, lots of commercial & residential development going on, the road infrastructure in the city struggles at times, lots of units on the outskirts though.
