Retreat is on Suffolk parade a few yards from Zizzi's and the Bee Hive is just round the corner too.
I recognise it on the map, We stopped in for a pint but i cant remember in the slightest whats the place was like. I rememeber we went for an Indian next door after which wasnt anything special.bulldog5046 said:

Normally has a good atmosphere in the evenings. I used to go several times a week when I worked in Cheltenham. Its hard to describe it thoughblueg33 said:
Montpelier wine bar, the retreat, the beehive all better than Oneils by quite some margin. The beehive is pub like the others are more wine bar like
The Tivoli for food (you'll need to book at weekends, it's very popular), or the Railway if you like sausages. Beehive for a pint. Though apparently the new chef/menu at the Beehive is actually very good.Oneils, all bar one, etc. avoid like the plague, horrible identikit pubs, no soul at all.
Zizzi's has possibly the worst service in the town (second only to the Lansdown), not worth a special trip. The Daffodil is good though, just down the road, good cocktails in the bar upstairs, and an amazing building.
I've heard good things about Jamie Oliver's place too.
Montpelier Wine Bar is technically my local, about a thirty second walk from my front door, but I generally find it too full of attitude. Men with tennis sweaters draped over their shoulders. It's a little pretentious, and people tend to look down their noses at you when you walk in. It's also the only place in town I've ever had a nasty comment about my car. Pulled up outside to post a letter on my way home from the office, only to be called a dhead by some random 40-something moron. Ok, I was in the Lambo with the roof down, but, honestly? Actually, I'm a nice guy. Took a random guy for a spin one night when we got chatting under similar circumstances when it turned out he was a total petrolhead.

Montpellier wine bar I tend to agree with you especially on friday and saturdayOneils, all bar one, etc. avoid like the plague, horrible identikit pubs, no soul at all.

Jamie Oliver's is ok, for food I prefer Coco's
(I have independant referee who says you are a nice guy so your self assessment is correct)

Or if you have tennis sweaters draped artfully over your shoulders, the wine bar as mentioned above.

is there one part of town i should generally head for? we are staying at the holiday inn which i believe is pretty central.
I'm a snob, so, Montpelier and Tivoli rather than the centre (which is a typical town centre at the weekend type of place, full of attitude and Ben Sherman shirts).Holiday Inn is actually at the other end of town on the slightly grotty side, but it's only a ten minute walk. If you can't be bothered, the cinema complex has loads of chain restaurants and bars, and that's directly opposite the hotel.
Oh, you'll be close to The Storyteller too, which is pretty good as well. But I'd still say the Beehive is one of the best old fashioned pubs in town, even though it'll be a bit of a trek for you.
