Explosion in Swindon (?)
Discussion
Actually saw the thing run a circle twice just to the west of Bath c.6.30pm - awesome racket had me hanging out of the window looking for the missile strike in the Circus.
ETA: thanks for the link; not quite sure why a Typhoon would be scrambled to help a heli though...

I was en route to France at the time, but my mrs called me say she thought there'd been an explosion or something
I guess this wasn't a pilot messing around, so I'll take any official reason for a pinch of salt as the MOD won't be telling anyone really why it happened in a hurry
Maybe as mentioned before, something airborne got a bit close to
'Cheltenham' ? Who knows

Cheltenham or the nuclear power stations would no doubt illicit a fast response. As it happens a user error probably resulted in a bit of a surprise for the heli pilot
I've been in RAF Coningsby when they've taken off - it's chuffing loud and fab to see

Heard it here in Oaksey as well. Loud bang with vibration through the floor.
It reminded me of an earth tremor that hit S Wales when I was a lad living there - I remember that as my bed lifted off the floor. Would have been in the early '70's.
I am sceptical about the whole Typhoon story too - news said 2 Typhoons, teletext said 1. I can't believe it would have been heard in an arc taking in W Mids - Warwicks. - Oxon - Wilts - Somerset by so many people, so loudly and at, what seems to be slightly differing accounts of the time.
I'm no sound engineer but having flown on Concorde (I know worst "I'v flown on Concorde thread ever" ) the sonic boom at Mach 1 (and again at Mach 2) lasted a second or so and from the inside was a dull thud and vibration; so I cant see how it wuld have been heard by so many people across so many counties at differing times!
Hmmm
PS My lad reckons its linked with the failed N Korea raocket launch and the whole 2012 end of the world thing. I told him he still has to revise for his GCSE's regardless...

A plane doesn't just make a boom at the instant it exceeds the speed of sound - it continues to make it for as long as it is in supersonic flight, and the people over whom it flies will hear it.I'm no sound engineer but having flown on Concorde (I know worst "I'v flown on Concorde thread ever" ) the sonic boom at Mach 1 (and again at Mach 2) lasted a second or so and from the inside was a dull thud and vibration; so I cant see how it wuld have been heard by so many people across so many counties at differing times!
Damn I missed this as I was driving home at the time! Always wanted to experience a sonic boom.
My colleague in Melksham said he heard fast jets flying (we often see Typhoons etc flying over work)but no sonic boom. We did have a few thunderstorms yesterday evening though so I'm wondering if he did actually hear it and mistook it for a thunderclap.

The thunder last night was truly awful. I was in a supermarket in Melksham at about the right time and didn't hear it. Apparently the Helicopter was outside of Bath when it was intercepted.
I didn't think it would be long for the UFO theories to come out.. http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/Fighter-jet-drama-B...

Roughly speaking, at Mach 1 the aircraft would be covering 1 mile every 5seconds (close enough for government work - doesn't take account of altitude, air temperature etc)Edited by Ian Lancs on Friday 13th April 18:13
