Need advise particularly from people with knowledge of the south east.

Leaving Leicester 3pm Friday, destination bath, via Bristol. Time is of the essessence.

Looking for parking which is safe over night near Bristol station, or failing that either a staion enroute to bath or in bath itself.

Will be drinking so plan is for car not to move from 6pm ish til midday Saturday!

Looking for some local knowledge, i have googled station car parks but unsure whether I will realistically find a space and whether they are reasonable go park in on a Friday night.

Anyone able to help smile

I think you might get lost looking for Bristol and Bath in the South East. wink

Parking in Bath city centre is a right pain. It's a lot safer for car crime than Bristol though. There is nowhere I would wish to leave my car overnight in Bristol city centre on a Friday night and while there are safer areas in Bristol it'd be logistically difficult to get from them to either of the train stations.

A better solution is to park in the small village of Bathampton and get a taxi (about 3 miles each way) to the centre of Bath. It's a quiet area with very low crime levels and the taxi fare each way will cost less than getting you to/from your car in Bristol, let alone the rail fare.

Good luck!

(And remember to look for it all in the South West!) wink

EDIT: If you take someone else's advice and get a train, remember that Bristol has two main stations: Bristol Parkway in the North of the city and Bristol Temple Meads which is very central. Neither are good places for cars at all. Bath Spa is smack in the middle of Bath.

Damn my geography! Thanks for the advise.

Bathampton sounds good to leave car over night, as an alternative what about kyrnsham (sp) and jumping on the train.

Will be going back to bristol so issue not parking there is I won't have any stuff! If that means my P@J is safe so be it. Will be staying in clifton, that ok area?

My naïve non car friend says park wherever bristol is safe as houses. Hence my sceptism!

Clifton is the nicest area of Bris IMO - I live there!
Good place to park your car but no where is 100% safe. Park on a side street if you can find a space.
Might need to get a taxi to Temple Meads or bus..

Err! Clifton is the only place I have ever had my car broken in to (years ago this is). Nice must mean over priced & full of students, thick, spotty, students, the place is full of them. Its also the absolute worst place to try & find a place to park, watch your wing mirrors as someone will knock them.

Bathampton mate.

Park in the trenchard street multistorey: http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/carpark/trencha...

I park there all the time, reasonably priced, especially on the weekends and a stones throw from the town centre. Just don't do anything silly and leave obvious nickables in view as you would with any other car park.

Just park it at Southgate carpark in Bath, under the new shopping centre. It's perfectly safe.

Thanks!

What is the best way into Bristol at 5pm? Usually get held up on the M32.

M32 is about as good as it gets I'm afraid.

You could drop down the M5 to Gordano services and then loop back to the suspension bridge, but that stretch of M5 is likely to be just as bad as the M32.

Particularly since there are (were?) roadworks around the M4/M5 junction - which gets snarled up @ 5pm anyway....

Well, it's not exactly Liverpool. hehe

Clifton's an OK place to leave your car- not as low risk as a small village, but bad stuff is unlikely. It's just an arse to get to from Parkway or Temple Meads railway stations. Redland is just as good an area (on the east side of Whiteladies Road) that's less packed for parking but sometimes you get broken mirrors etc from drunken students, scrapes or petty theft rather than loss of car (as a rule... no guarantees!).

If you're going for Clifton, park off Whiteladies Road, then get a taxi. Expect £10 each way to Temple Meads. eek If you're less pushed for time, bus numbers 1, 8 or 9 take you from Whiteladies Road to Temple Meads. If you go for the Bristol option, there are no Friday night pleasant routes. Just take your pick between M5 (Cribbs Causeway J17 or Gordano J19) or M32 approaches, grit your teeth and wait for it to end.

Or park in Bathampton, get on the train to Bristol Temple Meads from Bath Spa the following day, then bus it up to your mates (1,8 or 9 again) and get the train back to your car the next day? If you're going for the Bathampton route, you could cut off the M5 at J12 through Stroud, then take the A46 down towards Bath. It'd be significantly less faff than facing the M4/M5 junction on a Friday night if you're heading for Bath. Still, a bit of a faff from Leicester to get back to Bath before driving home...

Why go that far down? Come off at Cribbs and head over the Downs into Clifton.

This (J17) is probably the least painful route to Clifton on a Friday night. But you'll still be sat in traffic and it'll be annoying.

Looks good - is it appreciably lighter on traffic then?

Generally yes, most people will do J17 or pile along the Portway and have a good old sit looking at the bridge smile

The only sticky bit is Sylvan to Shirehampton Rd but should only take two cycles of the lights with any luck. Rest of it is pretty good and the only other slow bit will be Blackboy Hill which you'd get coming from J17 anyway smile
