Here's a brief story of the visit to Infinity Exhausts with the X-Type...

What came off...big and heavy!

What was put together...small and light smile

How it looked afterwards...like normal but biggerer wink

What it sounds like...best with headphones biggrin

Tunnel bits with windows open. Then from 1:30 it's all closed and back up the hill to the A38, mostly 3rd gear. No prizes for guessing which tunnel!

A bit too loud inside to live with every day so we're going back to see Martin. He does stuff involving wizardry and sacrifice of small furry animals.

Nice sound. I wouldnt change it, youll get used to it quickly when you dont drive it so hard. Now you are gassing it so you can listen, but give it a few days and your get used to it. Also after a couple thou miles it will build up a bit of carbon which will soften it

I know what you mean but I've been trundling too, it's that which causes the booming under gentle power. Most of my driving is in town and the low rev range. The harder driving is more howl than boom and is glorious wink

Having had an E34 V8 before which was similar on boom I know it'll do my head no favours. Had I not been selling the E34 I would have had that tamed too.

I'm sure I won't lose the howl or too muuch of that Scimitaresque lower tone smile

Something very nice I would imagine. They did a very clean and tidy CTR while I was there too. The big round dustbin he wanted on the back wasn't my cup of tea in the looks department but it sounded pretty good as he howled away afterwards.

If its resonance BOOM you are getting, I got rid of that by adding some dynamat to the inner floor of the boot and the boot lid inner. This stops the boot from reverberating like a speaker and stops the drone noise.

Can't help growing older but growing up is optional hehe

Really liked the sound of the X with the new cans, the car now plays lots of tunes. Getting into my S-type afterwards was like finding someone had hit the mute button. Hmm, need to release some of the hidden V8 throbbage..

Can't believe I lost drive in that tunnel wink

How does it sound rumbling away?

Filled the boot completely with blankets and a rolled up sofa bed mattress (Heath Robinson sound deadening) this afternoon and went out again. Made only the very teeniest bit of difference so will prob still go for a slight quietening and then add proper sound deadening when my wallet recovers.

In short, good. Certainly didn't sound boy-racer-ish, much more cultured than that smile

Yup, agree with that. 'Cultured' is a good description - it sounds interesting in a very good way rather than merely loud, from outside (or in!)

The solution to the slight 2k overrun drone is simple, perhaps an Xtrac sequential gearbox and more than 3Krpm everywherewink

Got home and noticed the 540's pipes look very ...small and restrictive. What do you mean, 'kids' ?

Damn. I was away at the weekend otherwise I'd have come along with my boy racer exhaust and joined the fun. Apparently my exhaust is "just the right side of offensive" according to the guy's at Infinity! thumbup

Chatting with Martin we decided on a simple course of action to keep the low growl and the high howl but deaden the boom..

This bit was cut out...(note the X-Type has no centre box as standard, hence the house sized OE back boxes)

This bit was made...

And then it was welded in...

So is it right? It is exactly what I want. Cruising on the motorway is almost normal Jag quiet. It does growl still at low revs pottering around town with only a small and jolly boom at 2000rpm (not a sonic boom), the mid range 2-3k under load boom is all but gone and then it howls at higer revs. Perfect blend of being able to drive in quiet elegeance or play tunes. I can even hear Classic FM again Shewie!

Am I happy? Happier than Mr Happy of Happy Town having just had is happy pills biggrin
