My daily e-mail from Avon & Somerset Police:

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of impersonating a police officer in the Weston-super-Mare area.

Detectives are trying to locate anyone who has spoken to someone introducing themselves as a police officer and who had concerns about their authenticity.

On Wednesday November 23, 2011 two officers on patrol in the early hours were travelling down Kensington Road in Weston-super-Mare when they noticed a car travelling in the opposite direction displaying blue flashing lights. The vehicle was stopped and while officers were talking to the driver they noticed items on the passenger seat, including handcuffs, which could have been used to impersonate a police officer.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer, taken into custody and after being interviewed was released on bail pending further enquiries.

An investigation is underway and the vehicle and items which could be used to impersonate a police officer have been seized. Detectives would now like to hear from anyone who believes they may have been stopped by someone driving a Ford Mondeo and come into contact with this man while he was passing himself off as a police officer.

The man is described as white with a slim build and short dark hair. He drives a gold-style Ford Mondeo.

Leading the investigation, Detective Constable David Townsend said: "This man was stopped travelling on his own in the early hours of the morning. Our enquiries suggest the car has recently travelled around the region and as far as Cornwall. If anyone believes they have come into contact with him I would ask them to come forward.

"The equipment has now been seized and people should not be unduly concerned for their safety. However, I would advise anyone unsure they are speaking to a genuine officer to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101 who will be able to verify the officer is who they say they are. If an unmarked vehicle indicates you should pull over and you are at all unsure drive to the nearest police station before getting out. Genuine police officers will be happy to take the time to reassure you of their identity."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101.

It's such a rare occurrence, but so entertaining when a fake cop encounters the real ones... I imagine I'd have had a similar "WTF?" moment seeing a clearly non-job car with lights on!
