As the genius of all things automotive, could you tell me why I should or shouldn't buy a Mazda RX8?

if you want an RX8 then get one....

the engine is good now but oil consumption still remains wink

the cars are pretty cool if you ask me and good value.

If you're getting it for pennies, get one. If it goes pop you can put another engine in.

Fuel consumption, according to a friend who had one (briefly), couldn't afford to run it.

if i recall correctly, the earlier ones had engine issues but the issues were rectified.

fuel consumption (as per any sports car) can vary wildly (i can get my smart forfour BRAB into the teens for mpg if i drive it right....!!). The RX8 loves to rev high and be driven wink

have a look on the RX8 forums and buy from there - forum members normally keep great cars (and you can search their username for previous posts about issues!)

I had one for 2 weeks. The engine turned out to be broken and had to return it to the dealer. It was a lovely car to drive though.

I would say if you want one, get it from a dealer, then immediately take it to mazda and get the engine compression tested.

When you discover you've just bought a car with knackered rotor seals?

I've looked at them a few times but always been put off by the daft fuel consumption. I drive a 5.7 litre, so as they say, go figure.

I had a 2003 one a couple of years ago and loved it. The 231 model seems the better choice, faster but the worst on fuel. I never had over 20mpg unless on motorway driving <70mph. Handling is great but as said above I didn't think it was actually that quick.

If you start, stop and restart the engine within 5 mins or so it tends to flood and not start again, can be a pain when moving it briefly when cold. It just needs a good tow start to get it going again - only happened once.

They are soooo cheap right now, so why not!

We've had an RX8 for 7 years and it's not missed a beat. It's well built, well equipped, reliable, handles brilliantly and is fast. Knocking around town gives about 25mpg and we get about 30 on a run, which is not that bad for almost 240bhp. Yes, it does use oil bit that's not engine wear but because the engine is injected with a small amout of oil by design. It goes through a couple of litres between services so it's not an issue. The other unjustified horror storey is rotor tip wear. That was true with the early(1980s) RX7s, but the later RX7s and the RX8s are no more prone to that than piston engines are to needing new rings etc. Ours is an 04 plate with satnav and heated seats, FSH and only 42,000 miles, its worth only about £3,500 so you can pick one up pretty cheap.

PS - ours is really her car and our son was suggesting changing it for an Audi S3. The wife checked out the What Car tests and they reckon the Mazda is the better car

Quite a few members here are familiar with my RX8. There is clearly the prospect of major engine problems, and oddly this seems to affect the "nannyed" cars rather than the properly ragged ones!

It's a fantastic performance bargain if you don't do many miles, as I do. The fuel consumption is utterly horrific, make no bones about it- I found it far worse in everyday use than my old 4.2 V8 A8!

But for the price, and what you can pick up, it's rude not to- I bought a 54reg, fully loaded, FSH at auction for £2100 and sold it on 4 months later at a profit. They tend to go massively cheap at auction since trade won't touch then.

At the very worst case scenario, the financial loss you'd suffer through a borked engine is negligible- You can get a freshly rebuilt engine put in for £2100- And the car is then worth a lot more since it's been sorted.

Do it!
