So we're off on our 1st proper holiday since my little 'un was born 2 years ago, and are headed west!

We're staying between Liskaerd/Looe, so not a long way from the border, and wondered if any of you local PH'ers could suggest any gems that are off the beaten track?

I used to visit every year when I was a nipper, but haven't been for 20+ years now. I'm specifically after some beach ideas, that would need to be easily accessible, and dog friendly...

Also any good child/dog friendly pubs in the vicinity of Looe/Polperro/Fowey and any wifi hotspots?!!

Cheers all!

Don't go in peak season if you like the idea of being able to park your car.

Go to the following places for the "best of cornwall"
Eden project, but only for 2 hours, near St Austell.
St.Mawes (lovely prettiest town/village)
St.Ives for the Tate Modern & beaches
Truro for the nice shopping
Padstow (Rick Stein Cafe for lunch)
Plymouth Aquarium on a wet day (i know its not cornwall)

Go to the following places for the "worst of cornwall"
Newquay
Lands End

Yes indeedy! Glad it's still nice there. Went there loads until I was about 14, and remember it being great back then...

Inn on the Shore at Downderry is quite close to you, large carpark too. Cheap and reasonable lunches at The Liskeard Tavern (Table Table chain of pubs) on the A38 at Liskeard.

Cream teas aren't bad in The Dartmoor Diner on the outskirts of Plymouth on the A386 Tavistock road.

I would also agree with Giles, although touristy places won't be as bad in off season!

Head to Looe, head around to Hannafore Point. Take the coastal path, there's a nice little cove which isn't far.

Whitsand Bay is nice, as is Mount Edgecombe for a walk- the Edgecombe Arms is a nice place to eat (average pub grub with nice views). Whitsand Bay beach is a hefty climb down so make sure you don't pack masses of gear to carry.

Downderry beach is pretty grotty when the weather is poor, but has a nice cafe & parking is good.

Fowey is an alright place to visit, & the Bodinnick is novel.

Carlyon Bay is beautiful

Hawkers Cove (up by Padstow) is also beautiful, but a little bit of a trek from the car

Daymer Bay is another nice beach with ample parking.

Don't forget Mevagissey if you are in that part of the world.

There's a huge holiday complex down there, is it not a private beach now?

Stayed at Mevagissey a few years ago with the then GF. Despite the weather being lousy we had a great time. As suggested above, we went to Eden Project while in the area - a good couple of hours.

ETA. Also went to Polzeath earlier this year - a good time was had by all.

Agree with this, Polzeath is my fave place in Cornwall - laid back, nice beach, great surf and a couple of nice pubs. Perfect!

I lived in Polperro for 10 years, went to school in Looe for 5, and have got loads of mates in Fowey so know the area very well!

Polperro is pretty, but there isn't much to do once you've seen the harbour & had a cream tea. Get a pasty from 'The Kitchen' if you can, they're great. The Mill House is the only freehouse in the village (rest are owned by St Austell Brewery) and as a result is the best pub in my opinion. Owners have a dog too so should be ok.

The Blue Peter pub down on the harbour is also very charming.

Looe is, in my opinion, like any other seaside resort and is a bit tatty in places.

Fowey is nice though, very upmarket these days; Dawn French lives there now apparently if that's anything to go by. Lots of opportunities to get out on a boat etc.

There is a tiny village called Lerryn near where you'll be - not much there but great place to walk the dogs along the river.

The best beach near you is along the coast road between Polperro and Polruan, but it's not the most accessible, you have to park at the top and walk down a narrow steep path, and I can't even remember what it's called! If you look on google maps you'll see it, it's the only decent stretch of sand between the two places.

Talland Bay is ok for dog walking too, just around the headland between Polperro and Looe. Not a great beach though - loads of pebbles.

But I reckon the north coast is best - Polzeath & Padstow are great places to spend a day or two.

Dear all,

Many thanks for your tips and help so far! Currently down here and despite the drizzle, having a great time!

Have so far checked out Looe, Polperro, Fowey, and Boscastle. All old haunts from my youth, and all pretty much completely unchanged from 20+ years ago, which is nice! Tomorrow will bring Polzeath and Padstow...

And for those who doubted the availability of wifi, I've managed to, 'borrow', a connection from the office at the site here! wink (and were are in the middle of NOWHERE here, without even SOS mobile reception)!

That's handy to know!

What cabin number are you in? Have you enjoyed the hot tub in the rain??

Really looking forward to my weekend there, just to get away.
