As you come across it towards Warminster and drop down into Chitterne, any of you that know/travel this road will know there is often a speed camera van as you drop down into the village tucked up on the left ready to catch you out, today I was coming across the plain to drop down and decent motorists are flashing and giving the thumbs down to warn of something ahead, I hit the 30mph limit at 30mph and crawl round the bend to see 3 members of the public with 2 wearing hi-vis vests holding clipboards and the third stood holding what appeared to be a handheld speed detector!
Now, if I had been going more than the 30mph limit would i be right in saying they would have noted down my number and passed the information on to the police, who would then write to me advising me about my speed or can they issue as fpn from the information received from the 3 people?

I was driving my daughters little clio before she passed her test, and i got snapped by the community police, 38 in a 30. Daughter recieved a very strong worded letter from A&S police, warning her of her driving etc, and what it would have been if it was them.......she was'nt best pleased with me biggrin

The bottom of the hill in Chittern, as you head towards Warminster, is a very popular spot for speed detection, it's normally a single plod with a hand-held as against a camera van.

Yes, don't speed in chitterne, your details will get passed on. Similar scheme across many if the local villages. Proper speed cameras near shrewton also, but only on the Stonehenge side..

Just to add, there can also be found an unmarked police car sat in the layby by the Henge car park early mornings on occasion to catch people speeding through the 40mph limit!

The most you would expect is a letter from the feds - FPN's can't be issued on the basis of evidence from Joe Public; has to be the BiB with the radar for that.

3 repeated letters result in an endorsement and frequently the local traffic section actually 'waiting' for you if you are a regular and consistent repeat offender. In order to be able to take part in what they call 'Community Speed Watch' you have to undergo training with your local traffic section.

Personally I think it's a good way for either villages or towns with a speeding problem to be able to contribute to putting it right, but there is no subsitute for physical restrictions to slow the traffic. I don't mean speed humps, but I do think pinch points and road narrowing has its place along with better signage.

I'm an enthusiatic driver, but would sooner work on the basis of complying in built up areas and having some fun when you pass the black and white disk!
