Me and my good lady are moving Leicester way soon, we're looking at either Market Harborough (big fan of the place but 35-40 Minutes Commute for the lady) or some of the southern Leicester Suburbs / Outlying villages. Oadby would be ideal for both of us but it's a little pricey and we've been thoroughly warned away from Wigston. Looking at Whetstone and Blaby where there are a few decent looking places to rent, if anyone knows the areas well and can offer some informed advice i'd thoroughly appreciate it.

Why not near Market Harborough? I think the surrounding villages are much nicer than Oadby/Whetstone/Blaby etc.

Hi, I live in croft which is in blaby district... it is nice around the area. We chose due to being 1 mile from the station (narborough) on the brum line and 2 miles from Next hq where the wife works... enderby, narborogh, cosby, blaby, littlethorpe and many of the villages around are nice. Near to fosse park and motorway (m1 & m69)... generally the villages get nicer (and smaller) the further from fosse park/leicester you get... harborough is a good cross country trek but is a nice town.... however, the places in blaby you are comparing to are a lot smaller... let me know if you want more info... on my phone so painfully slow typing at the mo!

Cheers for both your replies. MidlandMotorPur - Funnily enough we’re moving that way as my girlfriend has just got a job at Next HQ. We’re not averse to being close to Leicester, just keen to avoid living in some terrible chav hell suburb as we don’t know the area too well. Obviously we’ll be checking them out for ourselves as and when, but often you’ll only get a snapshot of an area when you go and walk around it, so just looking for local peoples opinions.

The basic gist of the situation is that we’ve both got new jobs, i’ll be working in Kibworth (half way between Market Harborough and Leicester) and my girlfriend as mentioned will be working in Enderby. So whilst we’d love to live in Market Harborough it’s going to be a 40minute 18 mile commute for her on some pretty congested roads in peak time if we do that. So we’re looking at Blaby, Whetstone etc as there’s easy cross country routes for me either cycling or in the Clio to Kibworth from there. There’s actually a pretty nice house we’ve seen in Enderby itself though, how would you rate that as a place to live?

To be honest, you don't really want to be any closer to leicester than enderby... emderby is a large village, some very nice bits, some new estate bits but not any nasty parts... it can be busy as there is a lot of next traffic... I have family in kibworth and it is a nice village... anywhere on the cross country route between enderby and kibworth is a safe bet if you like the village feel... it will be easier getting to kibworth from enderby rather than the other way round (at rush hr)... the back (kibworth end) of wigston is ok but the aylestone road side is fairly estatey... I am sure you get the picture - essentially anything further from leicester than fosse park and wigston has a village feel and you can't really go wrong! Next is a great company to work for... bonuses were paid today! Is your partner a graduate or moving from another company?

The house two up from us is to let, 3 bed cowshed conversion, £890 a month. Off Stoughton Lane.

It's part of the farm conversion in the middle of the field here:

Two PHer neighbours thrown in.

What sort of thing are you looking for and what's your budget?

Oscar – Cheers for that, all very helpful stuff, we’re looking at two places in Market Harborough tonight (still in the running simply because we love the town so much), a place in Enderby and a place in Blaby (underdog) both on Saturday. Looks like some great places out in the Hinckley direction, unfortunately that’d be a bigger commute for myself and my thirsty clio (well... thirsty for a clio). Good to hear your opinion on Next too, must admit from what i’ve heard they sound like a great employer with some excellent benefits, she graduated two years ago so is moving from another company but it’s still a relatively junior role. What % was the bonus this year? (of course if you don’t mind me asking).

Pothole – That place looks perfect, if I imagined exactly where i’d like to be living that’s just about it, and the PHer neighbours would be an added bonus. I love the location and the property itself looks fantastic and pretty much perfect for our needs. Sent my gf a link and she loves it too. Unfortunately though £890 really would be a stretch too far, top end for us rent wise is £650, £890 would be doable but leave us no room to save for a deposit/whatnot. For this reason we’ve been mostly looking at 2 bed modern apartments, houses and updated Victorian terraces. Saw a cracking little mews house on Tuesday, unfortunately despite all its character and charm it was absolutely tiny.

The hunt continues...

I grew up in Countesthorpe and really liked it. If I had the choice I would probably look at moving back there at some point, unfortunately the girlfriend doesn't drive and there is no direct bus route to her work from there.

I'm currently living in Thorpe Astley and moved in at christmas, although it is a large estate it is actually really quiet. I would recommend living there and there is always lots of houses for sale or rent. To be honest though if you want a more villagey (is that even a word?) feel then any of the villages around Blaby, Whetstone etc would suit. I believe Next run a staff bus as well from a lot of the surrounding areas and the city centre which could be handy as on site parking can be a bit tricky sometimes due to the volume of staff.

I bet when she went to University she didn't think she would end up working for Next. Bad luck

Agreed, the Harborough District is the best part of Leicester, it's pretty much all nice. I've lived in Kibworth for a year, moving here is the best lifestyle decision I've made.

OP where did you end up?
