East Midlands TVRCC June Meet - Calke Abbey
Discussion
John Case has asked me to coordinate the next East Midlands TVRCC Event on his behalf - this is:
Sunday 11 June - Calke Abbey, Ticknall, Derbyshire DE73 7LE.
not 11 July - thanks BG
Calke Abbey is described by the National Trust as "Vivid example of a great country house in decline, with extraordinary contents, historic park and restored garden"
- One of the Trust's most child-friendly and fun properties
- Baroque mansion with unique collections of curiosities
- Stunning 18th-century Chinese silk bed
- Invisible corridors, underground tunnels and a secret garden
- Enchanting walled-gardens and restored Orangery
- Historic parkland with ancient oaks
On Sunday, there will be a special exhibition of 'hidden Calke' with access to areas of the house that are not usually open. This will mean that it will be faitly busy, and anyone wanting to visit the house will have to queue for timed tickets.
Our meeting point will be from 11:30 at Donington Park Services, Junction 23A M1 (A42 / A453) for a 25 mile run to Calke taking in some of my favourite roads in South Derbyshire and North Leicestershire. The run to Calke Abbey will leave from the services at 12:00 prompt.
Those who are short of time or petrol (and are therefore planning to make their own way directly there) should enter the estate from 13:00 onwards via the Ticknall gate, off the A514 just outside Ticknall village.
Car parking at Calke Abbey is £3.50, refundable against entry to House and/or garden - costs of which are:
House & Garden: £6.80 per adult, £2.90 per child, family £17.
Garden only: £4.20 per adult, £2.10 per child, family £10.50
Under 5s and National Trust members admitted free..
See you there!
Nick.

Sounds great. Wonder is I can get a pass out for the day ...
Be aware that the Download Festival is on at Donington Park this weekend. Apparently 25,000 people already there camping. I think I saw most of them in Donington today. I have no idea what the timetable is for Download but would guess that things will be busier than usual. Plenty of plod in evidence today as well.
Erm, yes - realised after it was printed in Sprint and communicated. Hopefully they all be inside the cricuit by 1200 Sunday - if not, I have prepared a 'Plan B' route that doesn't use the bottleneck route of A453 past the Airport...
Too late to change now, will have to make the best of it.
