Do you think it is worth paying the extra for?

I paid £1.03 per litre today for 'Ultimate' diesel, almost £70 to fill the tank and wonder if it actually does anything better than the standard stuff?

Any thoughts?

I am running our VXR and our Citroen C4 on it at the moment. I am advised that both cars have self learning ecu's and that the car will take some time to adjust to it.

I was told if I booted it the car would learn after 1/2 a tank was consumed. That would appear to be the case with the Citroen as there is already a noticeable performance. Other people have told me that 2-3 tanks are required for us to notice. I haven't driven the VXR for a week so I can't say if there is a difference as yet with that car.

I run a 2005 Beemer 530d sport and have tried ordinary and ultimate diesel. I find that the car is much smoother with ultimate and delivers more power across a wider rev range. Fuel consumption is about the same.

Thanks for that. I had decided to give the 535d (Sport saloon) the better fuel and see how it goes. Almost run-in now, it seems pretty quick.

535d sport is quick anyway - nice car, good choice

I really like it, very grunty, but a friend with one said he felt his gave it's best after about 5000 miles.
Good range, just came back from a trip to Cornwall and got 545 miles out of a tankful.

Mine has now done 35k miles in its first year of life and is going well, performance levelled off at about 18-20k miles. Some days turbo lag seems more than on other days, and neither me or the stealer (dealer) can work out why. I reckon there is an ecu software fault.

For an everyday saloon, I would only swap it for another or a Maser Quattroporte

Does yours have the 218 bhp or 231 bhp engine?

As far as turbo lag goes, i can't really detect any on the 535d. I think the smaller of the two turbos covers tickover to 1500-2000 rpm and then the bigger turbo takes over happily.

Using the second stage of the loud pedal sees the engine rev to 5000 rpm in most gears.
It's quite revvy for a diesel.

Mine is the 231 bhp engine, but lacks the small turbo that yours has. It revs well to just over 5000 rpm and sounds ok (a bit like a gruff version my V8 powered G33), except when its cold, then it sounds like a tractor. The turbo lag is definately there below 1500 rpm, but on some days it's noticeable when changing gear even if the revs are up around 3000. Hopefully the next service will sort it out. Still a great car for every day use, it's almost so good that it's boring (does that make sense?)

'So good it's boring' used to apply to several Honda motorcycles, in my days of 2-wheelers. I know what you mean.
But as 4-door saloons go, there are few better around, than the 535d, imo.
I considered a new M5 V10, but i could not bring myself to spend well over £60K.
I did see possibly the ultimate saloon in Germany in February, a 7.3 litre V12 bi-turbo Mercedes, which must be insanely quick.
The Bentley Flying Spur is pretty rapid for a 2-tonne-plus saloon too!
Hope to see your 530d Sport some time!
