Hi all,
My In-laws are going away to Derbyshire to a cottage for their wedding anniversary - that being in Southwingfield, which I believe is closish to Matlock and Alfreton. We want to book a nice restaurant for them to go to whilst away but obviously have no idea whats good around that area - can an of you recommend something nice, not too pretentious, good value etc? Just normal English food.

There's always the White Hart, venue for one of the bi-monthly East Midlands PH meets - it's right on the doorstep of South Wingfield. Just had a fortune spent renovating the place - very nice. Not used the restaurant since the renovation, but it was always good before.

The Dog Inn at Pentrich has a good restaurant

If they like Indian food, the Matlock Balti in Matlock Bath has an extremely good reputation. - Having said that the Jeera in Crich is not too shabby either.

The Cross Keys in Turnditch (about a 10 mile driver from South Wingfield) is also very good.

It was good before. However, those of us who ate at last Tuesdays meet were somewhat underwhelmed, mediocre at best. And worst of all, they can't do decent chips! unforgivable IMO. Instead of a proper every day chip, we got some sort of soggy flaccid greasy unappetising non crispy failure of shaped roast potato type things in a poncey miniature copper pan. Quite a few pubs seem to be doing these things, usually stacked up in a lattice work like a Jenga pile. They would be OK if they were crispy outside and light and fluffy inside, but they always seem to be soggy limp greasy things. Crap as an excuse for a roast potato, and even crapper as an excuse for a chip!

Food fail, which is a real shame. Tommo could at least serve a decent chip.

Redeemed. Just had a very good Sunday lunch at The White Hart.

It's just a real shame they can't do chips.

Hmmm, maybe not. Just had terrible food and poor service here.

Inconsistent.

There is so much here that is right, yet so much that is wrong too.

I can vouch for both of those.

One place I really enjoy and I'm surprised that it has already been mentioned is The Bear Inn at Alderwasley. About 15 minutes drive from South Wingfield and is great. I would recommend it, particularly if they like cosy, friendly pubs with a good atmosphere. Booking is a must though.

Maazi in Matlock is a good shout if they like a decent Indian and is arguably better quality and definitely more reasonably priced than Matlock Bath Balti. However I would recommend Jeera in Crich above either of those, I live in Crich and perhaps go there a bit more often than I should!

The White Hart is also good as already mentioned but I haven't been there for a while now.

Hope you find something you like the sound of.

  • EDIT** - Just seen the 'normal english food' bit. The Bear Inn at Alderwasley is my recommendation!

Jeera at codnor is lovely and I have been told that the crich one is better still. The crispin inn at ashover is nice, so is the famous red lion at stanage - http://www.redlionbarandbistro.com

Also worth a shout is the carnarvon at teversal http://www.thecarnarvon.co.uk and its sister pub the bulls head at Denby.

A bit late but the Yew Tree in South Wingfield itself does nice food.

Tom, whereabouts in Crich are you? We're just down from Saint Mary's church at the Tramway end...

Thanks all - just to update this. We did indeed book here, the cottage the In-Laws rented was literally opposite the entrance to the pub. It was lovely food but the service, whilst polite and friendly was sooo slow and not the most professional. They need to start employing people over the age of 18 who actually have some idea of speed and professionalism.

It's a beautifully renovated building though and as you say Warren, has so much that is right but it's heavily let down by it's staff IMHO.
