Article from Shropshire Star newspaper today:

"Bogus police officers driving a car fitted with blue flashing lights today forced a motorist to pull over before stealing his BMW in an audacious daylight theft.

The carjackers, whose Astra was fitted with the lights, had also dressed in black and high visibility jackets to pose as officers.

The victim – a man in his 40s – was driving his white BMW 320, registration DS11 XYZ, along Dawley Road in Arleston when the thieves struck at about 7.20am.

As the victim drove along the road he noticed the black Vauxhall Astra approaching at speed from behind.

The Astra had blue lights illuminated in the front grille of the car.

The driver of the BMW thought the vehicle was trying to pass and slowed down. But the Astra slowed down, so the driver stopped his car by Lawley Services.

The driver of the Astra – described as Asian – approached the driver of the BMW and asked questions about the vehicle. He told the driver to get out of his vehicle and place the keys on the roof, police said.

The victim did so, but seconds later the man grabbed the keys and jumped into the BMW and drove off. The Astra also left the scene.

A police spokeswoman said: “The victim was extremely shaken up but was fortunately not hurt.”

She added they were keen to trace a man, who was not involved but may have seen something, wearing a high visibility jacket and walking from Lawley to Wellington".

The Cock is an award winning pub and serves some great beer.

Back on topic:
I am not 100% sure I could spot a bogus rozzer nowadays as crooks are getting better and better at it (obviously, someone in a G reg Sierra won't get away with it).

Can you request to follow police to a police station rather than get out of your car on the spot?

Only a police officer in uniform can stop a car. So if the bloke/lass that gets out of the car is wearing anything but a white shirt, and a stab vest with police written on it. I'm outta there. (Although the Mrs and I agree chances of them hijacking £1000 worth of slightly tatty MX5 is slim.)

I believe you can. If their mates turn up in a marked car probably best to stop though.

And this is why Strathclyde Police were found to be acting unlawfully the other day even though they apparently don't like to be told so.

There's no way in the world I'd stop for an unmarked car, blue lights or no blue lights. If they're really the police they shouldn't object to me driving to the nearest police station.

Thanks.

There were similar incidents of this on the Staffordshire/Shropshire border a few years ago with BMW/Mercedes cars being targeted (most of the attacks/robberies were in the very early hours).

Worrying all the same.

Apart from a very few forces-front line officers will be wearing black shirts-especially in the west mids, west mercia and staffs area.
There are rare exceptions where white shirts are worn such as non front line officers based, for example in police stations, occasional court (crown) etc...

Ah fair enough. I thought we got rid of the black shirts in the tussle we had in the 30s - 40s etc etc hehe

I Tweeted our local Super Intendant on correct procedure if we're not sure about the car trying to pull us over
"If you are unsure, just drive to the nearest police station before stopping"

Problem is that might mean having to drive through Bilston while trying not to be robbed!

Driving to the nearsest police station is a bit carp as advice goes IMO. If you don't know the area how can you find it? Nearest police station to me is 12 miles away and is badged Job Centre Plus! If you didnt know you would have no hope
