Nottingham caves are ace.
An aside: We have had quite a lot of dealings with Nottingham City Council of late and they would appear to be on their arse financially. Any opportunity to raise a charge for something, or fine someone, they are on it like a bonnet. Also selling off assets.
They are knacked. They've got several "heritage" buildings up for sale. It's all gone a bit quiet on selling council houses off & not spending the proceeds on capital items. There has, however, been an announcement that central government aren't now going to take over the running. An aside: We have had quite a lot of dealings with Nottingham City Council of late and they would appear to be on their arse financially. Bit of nostalgia. Nottingham High School.
Mrs Caziques and I flew to Adelaide last week (from Christchurch NZ), took the train to Perth (booze cruise), back to Brisbane by Air to see daughter and grandson, then back to NZ.
I remembered that a lad I started school with in 1965 lived just outside Adelaide, so we met up at Seaford for a catch up. He left for Australia in 1968, not seen him since then.
Anyone else start at Nottingham High School prep in 1965?
I find these things get more interesting as you get older - out of the 30 in the class there's only a couple I can't find.
Had a great time, wine tasting, beach, museums, good weather, discussing backgrounds.
As it happens Mark had no connections with Nottingham (his father was in the forces), on the other hand I do - hopefully I'll be back in Nottingham in 2025 for a 60 year school reunion, not forgetting of course everyone from Nottingham Swimming Club.
There are a lot worse places than Nottingham.
Picture on its side, Australia you see.

Just been into the city centre for the monthly haircut, it really has become a sthole and yet they are building more flats.
Thankful to come back to the Vale of Belvoir and home in the end, I used to love going into town as a teenager and have spent time over the years living in West Bridgford.
I guess the challenges facing Nottingham centre are the same for all major towns and cities.

It's proper scruffy in the streets leading to Broadmarsh But, it's still a great place. True about student flats, I believe there are upwards of 60,000 students in Nottingham.

I think the city centre is appalling in most regards.
Had the misfortune of having to go there a few weeks ago - parked in the shiny new Broadmarsh car park and then had to endure the walk from there through what looked like the blitz had just happened.
It’s just an absolute sthole in general.

I would say that Nottingham is well resourced, in terms of amenities close to it. Trent Bridge, two football stadia, live music venues, near to countryside worth walking in etc etc.
But it's financially on its arse and I cannot see where salvation is coming from.
There's also Nottingham City Council, a more feckless body of lefties you will not find.

I'm properly hacked off. I was in the Castle Pub Saturday & all the councillors were in there & Lillian Greenwood MP. I think they instinctively know when not to make eye contact.
I got home to find that Mellen had been round and knocked on our door canvassing. I missed a great chance to tell them exactly what I think!

When have medium/large sized cities not had sizeable rough components to them? When do you think the city centre declined? Because there will have been unsavoury aspects throughout nearly all of its thousand year history.
Look at any set of photos from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. The centre was different, but was it definitely better?
I think a lot it is just our perception changing as we get older. We focus on different things- we're not as drawn to the shiny and novel as we once were, we tend to spot details that we didn't see x number of years ago, things that we once liked may not longer be present or have changed, and so on.

But there have been times where Nottingham City Council seemed to think Nottingham was London and that people would come, regardless of how difficult it was made to do so.
They put in the trams, which service mainly the poorer areas, whilst making it more difficult for car drivers to get in.
Whilst the 90s and noughties were admittedly a different time, you could drive right into the city, park for free and use the facilities - spending money basically.
I get the impression that central government doesn't like Nottingham's council, which is why investment bypasses the city.

Oh, that’s absolutely true. Mansfield and Ashfield with their red-wall Tory MPs are getting plenty of levelling up cash but all of Nottingham’s bids got rejected. I don’t think anyone believes that’s a coincidence…Louis Balfour said:
I arrived in Nottingham today from London, alighted at the tram stop exit from the station.
Piss and weed was all I could smell. Piss... and weed.
A friend of the wife went to watch James in Nottingham at the weekend, it was cancelled so they had a night out in town instead. She said it was awful, just beggars and druggies. She said she’d never go back.Piss and weed was all I could smell. Piss... and weed.
It’s a shame, I used to love living there, it’s gone down hill a lot!
