Post bump; seems my son has found a girl in Nottingham so thinking about an overnight there coming up from Cardiff. Any recommendations of things to do for a middle aged couple with a 13yo in tow whilst the eldest does his thing?
Did the big romance take place? Louis Balfour said:

We haven’t mentioned the castle (which it isn’t), it’s a pleasant way to spend an hour or so.
You mean apart from when I listed it last page, you mean. 2 sMoKiN bArReLs said:

The trust running the Castle went into liquidation today, so the castle is now closed until further notice.
I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned that on this thread Louis Balfour said:

Steady on! Only managing PH once per day but yes great suggestions thanks. I will take the next few days to research them and come back with any questions, Have spent the last 2 days visiting stately homes around Cardiff and so NT properties will also be in the mix.
Well, NT throws you at calke abbey, kedleston, or Belton house. Belvoir castle isn't nt but worth a look. They're a long half hour away though. Nearer Nottingham are the ruddington museums.https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/b...
If anyone wants a positive experience in nottingham i can shamelessly plug Small Food Bakery on Seely Road, based in Primary (an old primary school), alongside a decent coffee shop and a gallery/bookshop. sells proper sourdough, alongside other goods (pasta, cakes).
Winner of BBC Food and Farming awards, also amusingly briefly was number 1 restaurant in nottingham (it's not a restaurant) on tripadvisor by some oddity in their system.
one of a number of grass roots efforts around notitngham (and the wider UK) to improve the food system culture, if that's of interest to you - if not, the bread is probably the best in notts, also connected to the Nottingham Mill Coop in Sneinton Market which is restarting the milling that connects the grain to your table

Nottingham
This street used to be the most fashionable (presumably high rent) locale in Nottingham.
Now a planning application for HMOs above short lease shops.

But, almost perversely it's now got a higher occupancy of shops than any time in the last ten years. It's Fletcher Gate that's now tumble weed city. This street used to be the most fashionable (presumably high rent) locale in Nottingham.

Fletcher Gate doesn't have the same intensity of retail on it and IIRC it's all let except what used to be Element.
When ALB bought the units on Bridlesmith Gate I assumed they had their eye on resi in some way, shape or form. I am surprised they want HMOs there, though. But then, perhaps that is how they perceive the Nottingham market is, currently.

About a 100 years ago the Nottingham caves used to be accessed the first Sunday every month through a secret door opposite where Hippo's nightclub used to be. As impoverished stoooodents we took that tour a time or two. Then had a skinful at the Fountain, Bench & Bar and the Dog & Bear.

An aside: We have had quite a lot of dealings with Nottingham City Council of late and they would appear to be on their arse financially. Any opportunity to raise a charge for something, or fine someone, they are on it like a bonnet. Also selling off assets.

They are knacked. They've got several "heritage" buildings up for sale. It's all gone a bit quiet on selling council houses off & not spending the proceeds on capital items. There has, however, been an announcement that central government aren't now going to take over the running. An aside: We have had quite a lot of dealings with Nottingham City Council of late and they would appear to be on their arse financially.
