Hi,

My dad bought a set of alloy wheels from a well known breaker's, and months later when I had them shot blasted it became apparent that the wheels had once cracked and had been re-welded poorly, which explained them wobbling side to side at motorway speeds.

I have heard from a man who specialises in Porsches, 928s especially, that cracking is not unheard of for these wheels, and they can be re-welded well, if done correctly, like heating the entire wheel up before welding to minimise warping and such like.

Is there anywhere up here I could take them just to see whether a second attempt to repair them is on the cards? I'm supposing I would need a wheel specialist, or perhaps just a good machining firm?

I know of firms such as SEM, but I don't think they do re-welding?

Do Romax in Stockton do that sort of thing?

Cheers.

Hi Sam, Romax definately did but, they're apparently under new management now so not sure.
If you have no luck in the NE forum try asking in general gassing but, beware of cross-posting rules and get ready for a load of intenet "experts" to tell you you shouldn't weld a wheel! wink

The only specialist I've heard of who weld Porsche alloys was Autofarm. I'm going back a few years to when they used to produce modified 911's and often advertised cars with widened Fuch's alloys. Might be worth a try.

Thanks everyone, I'll do some searching...!

Ha Mark, we've had that already! But we're sort of encouraged by this fella we spoke to. The actual reason we rang him in the first place was for that rear muffler bypass we've talked about for ages! Sounds the Bog's Dollocks! haha!

Cheers

Are they forged CS wheels then as they're well known for cracking? Might be worth a post on the relevant forum of PCGB too, you don't have to be a member to register on the forum.

They're the standard S4 wheels, but they may well be forged too?

Give these guys a call: http://www.wefixalloys.co.uk/

Dave the owner is a really good guy.

I recently had my BMW wheels refurbished by them and they were very good. They don't do welding themselves but outsource it, while I was in there I saw a set of massive alloys that had been welded up. You honestly could not spot the repair and they were a polished finish rather than painted.
