K & N Oil Filters

Does anyone use a K&N Oil filter? Any comments would be appreciated; good or bad product?

Can't speak for the oil filters, but I had a K&N air filter in my old Fiesta. Made the induction noise much rortier - or at least as rorty as you can get in a 1.3L...Joe
K&N are generally regarded as good products, though the "Stick a K&N air filter in it" mod has gained derision from some, mainly because some kids think it makes their car vastly quicker! I would have thought the oil filters would probably be decent.
What car is it going in?
What type of filter? (Is is a panel filter to go in the airbox in place of the OEM paper filter, or is it a cone/induction kit?)
Generally things to be aware of are:
- Fitting a cone may suck up hot air from the engine bay if you don't sort out a 'cold air feed' to it. This will make the car slower, although it will 'sound nicer'.
- Fitting any type of oiled filter MAY cause problems with the MAF (airflow meter) depending on the type. Some MAF's use a 'hot wire' and the cooling effect of the air rushing past it is used to determine the airflow. Oiled filters (especially overoiled) can cover the wire in oil and give false readings. Other types of MAF (e.g. Karman Vortex) are not affected. The Karman Votex MAF measures the disturbence to the air caused by a fixed pole, kind of like watching a flag flap in the wind, to work out air speed. These are not affected by the oil.

My car is an Audi TT 225 (remaped to 268) Quattro Coupe. It's not the K&N air filter element I'm enquiring about it's the K&N OIL filter. I agree whole heartedly with you about the K&N air filter. I don't use their panel filter or induction kit for the reasons you've quoted but would like to use their OIL filter.
Cheers

Lots of 944 drivers use K&N oil filters as the filter mounts upside down and is tight to access. The K&N ones have a nut welded to the bottom so you can get a socket on to loosen/tighten. Other than that, pretty standard filter.
I would check that your filter doesn't incorporate a check return valve though, if it does then stick with OEM!!!

I use K&N oil filters on the Mustang. Main reason is they are readily available and the nut welded onto the bottom is quite handy when it comes to removal.
Yep same here, on my last oil change I installed a K&N filter for ease of removing next time I do an oil change (I hope anyway). Gogoplata said:

Re: some peoples views on the air filters, what are your dislikes about them? I've had one on a previous car and never had any bother. What (panel filter) would you recommend in place of one? current car has Green Cotton one in, it came with that and it also seems ok, up to now.

This also for my Subaru as the filter is beside the sump and only humans with the grip of Goliath himself are able to remove it as using any sort of tool to do the job is a waste of time.

So far as the Audi TT is concerned, and probably other marques, if the K&N air filter is over oiled by mistake (easily done) it usually causes the MAF to fail. I would use the OEM air filter every time...just my opinion.Re: some peoples views on the air filters, what are your dislikes about them? I've had one on a previous car and never had any bother.
