Just wondered if anyone had seen camera vans on the western by-pass since it became a 50 limit? Lot's of people still doing 70, I am not sure that some realise yet that the limit has changed so plenty of money to be made. It would be interesting to hear of any sightings, location etc.

Where is this new 50mph limit? Which junctions is it between?

It's 50 from the Bowes Incline all the way along until just past the metro centre.

I saw 50 signs up in the area, thought they were just temporary. Can't see the justification for it TBH. Maybe at peak times, but all the time?

Not seen any cameras but have heard unconfirmed rumours about average speed cameras being used along that stretch.

I know that stretch can get busy, but 9 times out of 10 that I've gone down that stretch you could safely travel at Autobahn speeds (well north of 100mph), the only thing preventing this is the legal implication of doing so. However, putting this stretch down to 50mph is just ridiculous, it's not the only bit of dual carriageway around here that gets backed up on a regular basis.

Never saw any last time I was up there, they were there when doing the road works a while back but they took them down.

It was about a year ago I heard they were proposing to do it, but it was meant to be in conjunction with them trying squeeze another lane in.

I noticed the signs, but thought they were temporary for roadworks.

I certainley didn't see any advance warning signs, like "new speed limit in force" or "50 mph in 1/2 mile" officer!

I use this road every day and its a nightmare to and from work.Unless the speed limit is enforced it's useless.Plus it should be further back towards kingston park because thats where the maze of on-off slip roads start where no one seems to have the ability to merge in turn to keep the traffic flowing.I've seen the traffic jam starting at north gosforth and it aint giong to get any better with a million houses being built near there. It wouldn't bother me one bit if they put average speed cameras up all the way to the angel as it should control the traffic flow better BUT it's got to be variable ala M25.No point in it being 50 at 3 in the morning.

When should it be 50 then? At 3am when it's empty and you can do a million MPH, or at 8am when it's so busy you can barely do 10mph, let alone 50mph?

The speed of traffic around that whole stretch is self-regulating as it is. The number of old b'stards doing 45mph on the A1 because it's the route to their friend Bessie's house, is unbelievable.

So what you have is a well maintained road with good visibility that should absolutely be 70mph, that is actually about 50mph at the best of times simply because of the volume of traffic. All that's happened here, is that some signs have been put up so that those of us who DO 'hover around' 70mph when possible, can now get nicked and pay a fine for it.

End rant. biggrin

yeah not many have noticed its fifty yet but I did notice that the north bound slip road to the metro centre is signed as national speed limit now. How the hell does that make sense when there is a junction with a set of lights at the top of it. Haven't been on any of the other slip roads recently but I'm guessing they are all national limit and the actual road isn't

Well I just went up that stretch today, first time in ages I've got to admit, I forgot all about that speed limit until I got half way down, and suffice to say I was doing just a "little" over the limit, ridiculous how they havent made it a LOT more obvious! mad

The answer is to abolish speed limits.

There might be a case for properly dynamic variable part time limits for flow control but we should get rid of full time blanket limits.

Been on the road loads of times these last 2 weeks and have not noticed the signs.
Seems like speed limit signs are not put in an obvious place for us to notice or a single sign is put up on a long stretch of road so easily missed .
Was impossible to go over 50 lately as the traffic was hardly moving.

I often think that it's done deliberately to catch motorists out! If you have been a bit further north where the A1 crosses the Tyne to the A69 junction, there have been roadworks on and off there for months. Sometimes the 50mph signs are up, sometimes they only put a "men working" sign, sometimes they put the temp limit sign up but no "end of limit signs", sometimes they put the temp limit signs up and don't cover the NSL signs etc. I don't know if they have ever put a scamera by these roadworks but the signage is diabolical. It's like they want people to get caught, because of course that would mean more £££ in the pot.

All the signs that are up there will be in accordance with the regulations set out TSRGD, so it's just your observation skills which need improving.....tongue out

I was more concerned with the seemingly random and completely inconsistent manner they use the signs. When driving past temporary 50 signs and uncovered NSL signs, and then the 50 signs stop with no "end of 50 zone" signage are you really in the clear? Sometimes there is an end of 50 sign, sometimes there isn't. Sometimes they cover the NSL signs, sometimes they don't seem to bother.
