Completely understand what you mean! Village hasn't exactly been great the last week or so, I could use some myself.

Neighbour on one side's just bought some snow socks to see if they help, and another just bought a Defender

After trawling the internet cheapest I found was Kwikfit of all places,
that included all the favourite internet supply to your door places. Had
to book and pay upfront online but had them in a couple of days.

Got a set of 205 55 16's on the Alfa 156 and so far not been stuck anywhere
in and around Chester le Street and too and from Blaydon.

Mytyres (although Reifen, a German website are cheaper for larger wheel sizes). £14 a wheel fitting if you use one of their approved places, but I'd probably just buy the tyres and get them fitted locally for less than that (esp on 16" wheels).

Been discussing mytyres on briskoda forum as I wanted some winter tyres for my wife's fabia. Horror stories abound about non delivery, credit cards being charged and no tyres arrive, no one answers the phone etc. Looks like a UK site with an 0800 phone number but unclear where they are based, possibly somewhere in Europe. I've decided against using them, better to pay a bit more from somewhere like kwikfit when you know you won't get ripped off.

Ordered a Set for our Skoda about 6 weeks ago and they arrived in about 3 days. Also ordered a set fro
Reifen for the XF and they arrived in under a week. Think they bought get the tyres from Hanover (Delti).

O/T. I got some snow tyres last week for the Clio and paid £71 each, I checked again yesterday they were £117 each. To be fair though it's not as bad as the tyres for the wifes A5 in a week they went from £289 each to £675 each yikes
This is what you can expect from one of the firms mentioned on here. The Clio only has them on the front but the difference is unreal. I can thoroughly recommend them

I bought a set of nokian winters and a set of bridgestone blizzaks from mytyres in the middle of the snow last year, both sets delivered very quickly, no issues, would happily use them again.

Been reading up on these tyres especially since the wife had a near miss in the Fiesta going dead slow but downhill. All the independent reviews are consistent in that in the wet, ice and snow these tyres will stop you quicker due to the make up of the compound. The wear is not much worse than a standard tyre so look like they're well worth fitting as it looks like this type of winter is going to be the norm.
Anyway I ordered two 195/50H15 Marangoni Zeta Linea from Kwikfit online, fitting arranged tomorrow. Cost breakdown each: tyre £40.80, nitrogen fill £1.00, tyre disposal £1.50, new valve and balance £9.50. Total £105.60 including tyre lifetime Marangoni guarantee - free puncture repair, free re-balancing and valve replacement, free nitrogen refill.
Hope this helps.

Please ignore my last post re Kwik Fit. They've admitted their site is confusing and have apologised. They are also refunding my card as the tyres shown are not winter tyres. The lady on the phone was very helpful and said that many had been caught out, they do not have any winter tyres in my size and in any case would only fit them four at a time.
Back to searching.

I would honestly try mytyres, granted they may have stock issues at the moment, and insisted on a copy utility bill scanned through for my first purchase but otherwise they supplied my 2sets very quickly last year.

really, parents just had theres done at kwikfit and they said they will not supply and fir only 2 tyres, thinking about it, makes a great deal of sense fitting 4 tyres that are of equal compound rather than that of 2 setsa that will perform very differently in these conditions.

I wouldnt like to hear the verdict on an insurance payout if an examiner found out winter tyres on the front and normal summer use tyres on the rear

Looks like you missed my last post (see above) which addresses all of the points you make. I did in fact contact my insurers re fitting the tyres and they were happy that safety would be improved rather than the car being 'modified'. As someone pointed out in an earlier post, even with just two winter tyres fitted the benefit is well worth it.

Got mine delivered to my local independent tyre fitters by tyremen.co.uk (they are in north east IIRC)

Hankook Ice Bears 225/40/18 - £105 each >> Fitted to A3 Quattro

Had significant snow fall in North Oxon yesterday and they worked perfectly.

To add to this my neighbour got a set of Pirelli winter tires shipped from the US for his VXR8, 2 or 3 bags of gravel in the boot and he got further this year than his Renault Clio last year.

ETA : he got the VXR8 ones from here http://www.tirerack.com - < 1wk delivery from the US (Not cheap delivery but what he saved on the tyres it was more than worth it)
