Can anyone suggest a company to me for to do this?

I passed my test after 1st Jan 1997 so it meens I can't legaly tow a trailor over 750kg (no good to tow cars etc).

I've spoken to 2 companies so far to get an idea on costs. The test is £115 and is included in the quotes.

First company

http://www.lgvtrainingcourses.co.uk/ estimate around £800 inc the test(they'd do a half hour drive with you to see how you are and then asses how long it will take to do it)

second company

http://www.driver-training-northeast.co.uk/trailer... do a 2 and a half day course at £630 inc the test.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of doing this and costs involved

Does anyone know what the test involves?

I've been towing trailers for 11 years blissfully unaware of this rule but got a tug the other month so need to sort my B+E license.

I know the test is around £130 but not sure what's involved and can't find much info on it.

p.s. Sorry for the hijack.

The test is £115 and is VAT exempt, details are on the direct.gov website below. Did you get a fine etc? Points?

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensi...

the test involves...

The car and trailer practical driving test
The car and trailer test (B+E) is based on the lorry driving test and lasts for approximately one hour. Please note that B+E tests are conducted at vocational (bus and lorry) driving test centres.

The towing test (B+E) includes:

•vehicle safety questions
•an off-road reverse manoeuvre
•a controlled stop
•uncoupling and coupling of the trailer and driving on the road
Your practical driving test will include approximately ten minutes of independent driving. This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently.

Sounds easy enough. Thanks for that.

Yeah 3 points and £60 fine. Oh, and they impounded the trailer with a car on the back and I had to pay £200 to get it back. frown

Cheers

Geordy Boy, where are you from. I did my trailer test 2 years ago now, and used a guy from Durham.

I, like you, had a search around, but found everyone does training type courses, but I was after something like when you did your driving lessons.

I used BSafe Driver Training... Cost me a lot less then the quotes your getting.

Think I had 4 lessons all together, then straight in for my test... I would say i spent no more then £300 on the whole lot.

If you need any information / tips let me know smile

I took my test at Darlington... You first have to manoeuvre your car/trailer in reverse around a pole and into a bay

You then have to show you can un-hook the trailer, drive away and park up beside the trailer, and then drive behind the trailer and hook it all back up again and check all your lights, load and everything else is hooked up and safe for road.

You will be asked some questions, ie how should you load the trailer - heavy items low as possible and over the axels... Mimimum tread depth and what not...

You then drive around the corner, and are asked to perform an emergency stop.

Once you have completed this, you then go on the road for 30-45 min of town/rural/motorway-dual carriageway driving.

You'll be asked to pull up at the side of the road in a safe place, then asked to drive away again (i was asked a few times in a few different locations)

Remember 50mph in national speed limit single carriage roads and 60mph on dual carriageway / motorway

If the trailer starts to wiggle/jump about, just let your foot off the accelerator and the trailer brakes will straighten it all up again.

Just remember to take round-a-bouts slow, my examiner made a comment about the speed I was taking round-a-bouts with a trailer on the back "if you had a high load on, you could flip the trailer" - but passed me smile

Looks like there are new parts to the test now as well since i took mine, 10 min of driving to a location using signs and what not.

Sorry to hijack but does anyone know if there is a limitation on the length of the trailer that is towed, on top of the weight. My trailers 16ft but not sure if I can legally tow it, especially since I passed my test after those regulations mentioned above.

Thanks

I think its mainly down to weight and how much the trailor is capable of carrying

The maximum length of trailer you can tow is 7M (excluding tow hook or bar) unless the tow vehicle has a GVW of 3.5 tons or more.
