Blackwells on the green in Norton are pretty good.

Get a pork pie whilst you're in there too - they have won awards for a reason! lick

It's 10 miles out of your range but this place http://www.broomhousedurham.co.uk/farm-butchery is really really good. Organic free range Aberdeen Angus beef and saddleback pork all butchered on site.

They've got a coffee shop and are right in the middle of some decent country roads so it's worth a drive out anyway.

If you get lost just look for the Pontop Pike transmitter.

Well worth a visit.

Might be a bit of a trek but Bolams in Sedgefield are supposed to be very good. Its difficult to get near the place on a weekend and recently the barbeque meat - spare ribs, bangers, burgers etc etc have been flying of the shelves - combination of footy and warm weather.

I think they slaughter on site and the meat that walks in is local whenever possible.

Bolams stack it high and sell it cheap, as a result I find the quality of meat a bit lacking. The beef is rarely aged very well and always looks a bit bright red.

However, they do sell a steak called a Big Red. You'd have to be a hungry man to finish that and a pan of chips! wink

Oh, their roast bones are great for dags.

You need to speak to my friend who has one of the best heads of Charolais in the country.

'Marwood Charolais'.

They're farmed at Elwick, off the A19 just outside Hartlepool.

He has a butchers in Hartlepool. I can vouch that this is some of the best meat money can buy. Not cheap, but divine.

Pittaway's on Borough Rd in Darlington (round the corner from The Civic Theatre) are very good, most of the beef is locally reared on their own farm and they are good for game too. They supply all of the better local restaurants,we have been using them for years.

Slight thread resurrection here, but are you still using this farm shop? I was just going to pop over at the weekend and take a look, but wanted to check if it was still worth visiting?

Still going, and better than ever. Stopped in over the holiday weekend and there were about 20 cars in the parking area. Not cheap and I wouldn't make a special trip there, but if I'm passing during opening hours I try to drop in.

I second Roots, just down the A19. Great farmshop with some lovely cakes to eat after your steak.

For the Durham one Aldin Grange in Bearpark is far better for beef, pork and sausages in my opinion. Only opens 2 days a week as they butcher their own produce and it's a smaller working farm. Doesn't do his own lamb but buys it in.

Middlesbrough we used to always use the one in Great Ayton?
