Having lived in the catchment of Newcastle airport for over a decade, last night was our first serious brown trouser moment. Heard what sounded like the usual passenger jet, engine at FULL pelt (much more so than the average take off), screech over our roof at VERY low level. I looked out the window expecting to see utter carnage/crash/fireball. Anyone else in the area experience it, or see what it was, or know what happened? Was probably around 8.15 ish.

I've witnessed everything from military aircraft, red arrows, concorde, Emirates etc etc, but nothing comes close to what was heard last night.

Sean.

Landing at Manchester airport a few years ago in a Boeing 747 the pilot hit the runway so hard all the overhead lockers popped open and the oxygen masks were all jolted out of their compartments. It was funny to see so many people trying to put the masks on, did they really think we were still at high altitude.

How strange, I live up at consett and sometimes we are on the flight path for newcastle bound jets.
I did hear a very loud rumble but assumed it was on the TV or some tosser hooning up delves lane. I was going to get up and look outside but my youngest son had just fell asleep on my shoulder so couldn't.

I would be intrested to know what the racket was

Weird thing is we live about 3 mile south, to the side of the runway, (think falcons rugby ground), so planes rarely fly directly over us, no idea what this was but I genuinely thought this was coming down and going to hit us or nearby, physically ducked as it went over. Also confirmed by a mate near Crofters Lodge who also almost shat himself by the sound of it.

If it really did interest you, you can ring the Air Traffic Control at Newcastle and ask them. Give a location and a time any they should be able to tell you what it was, they log everything now...

I only rang in the past when someone in a light aircraft thought it would be funny to practice coming low down onto the A69, as if he was going to land on it. I just rang to see who the guy was! Idiot! biggrin

Maybe if your not directly under the flight path your not used to the sound of a jet overhead, this is assuming one deviated from the usual noise abatement procedures?

Or maybe the Ruskys brought one of their tin cans over biglaugh
