New to the North East.... Which Roads?
Discussion
Hiya people, I've recently moved up to the sunny NE from Manchester and have some spare time on Tuesday afternoon. My track car (MR2 mk1.5)is primed and ready to go. I however am not... I'm looking for somewhere fairly local cira 50 miles, with good scenery to have a bit of a blast (twistys are favourable) and then maybe somewhere to stop for a coffee and a cake....
Any suggestions please? I live just outside Wallsend and so far I seem able to find dual carriageways and housing estates...
Also are there any regular local meets in the area or do you wait until spring as we do in the North West?

Cheers Sean. I was thinking of heading North or towards the coast but I think my mind has been changed! Hoping to head up to the Hartside Cafe tomorrow afternoon. Lets hope it stays fairly dry....
There some nice roads up the coast but more scenic than thrilling driving. Hartside and all the roads in that area are where the actions at. A nice route up is to go via derwent water then head to stanhope and then over to alston and up to hartside (look out for snow). It's worth continuing past the cafe and on to melberby before you turn back and do it all again Further afield the roads up around the Borders and kielder are also fantastic. Or to the south the north York moors and north Yorkshire. We really are spoilt for choice up here.
Welcome to the north east.
Very very enjoyable run. We didn't do it all in the end....
We headed to Alston and decided to continue to Hartside pass to grab a bite to eat. On reaching the summit we found the cafe was closed so we continued and ended up in Penrith!
Whilst having lunch there it started to snow which made for an interesting ride back to say the least... R888 really like snow! Thoroughly enjoyable road and the scenery was fantastic. I'll definately be up for a run with everyone at some point, always good to meet new faces.
I'm going back at some point to do the route as posted since we ran out of time yesterday.
Also FYI the road is really crumbling thanks to the recent weather. Expect roadworks on there in the near future....
Many thanks to the 911 driver who let me past too.

Good morning
I'm really glad you enjoyed the run. Hartside Cafe keeps irregular opening hours in the winter. It's always best to 'phone them first if you intend to eat there; good belly busting food to set you up for the push to Haydon Bridge and beyond.
Welcome to true north, by the way and happy days driving
