Hey everyone,

well i've settled into the flat and am actually enjoying living in middlesbrough, its not half as bad as folk say!!

one thing thats bugging me is, comming from scotland i'm used to lots of good country roads on my doorstep, yet i'm bringing my motorbike down and haven't had the time to go adventuring but what are some good twisty country roads about middlesbrough?

i came across the b1365 just past bluebell hotel then thru 3 roundabouts and it seems ok, but didn't know how long it goes for as had to turn back as it was actually a wrong turning.

so what good roads are about, how long they last and how far are they from linthorpe?

cheers

Adam

Keep going on the B1365 until you get to Stokesley. Follow the signs for Helmsley via the B1257. Great road, although popular with BiB too...

Also try the coast road to Whitby, comming back across the moors to Guisborough. Stopping in Whitby for fish and chips of course, its the law.

Yorkshire dales and Durham area are also now on your doorstep.

You are on the doorstep to some of the best roads in the country, as already mentioned, the B1257 Stokesley to Helmsley rd, then there's Blakey road / Blakey Ridge and pretty much any road in the North Yorkshire Moors, my particular favourite is the Whitby - Pickering road (A169), some superb stretches of road for overtaking, and some nice twisties too. Venture west to the Dales and you're about 1/2 hour away from Buttertubs pass, one of Jeremy Clarksons favourite roads.

I assume you're a photographer going by your username, give us a shout and there are a few locals who enjoy a drive and photography smile

If you take the B1257, carry it on through Helmsley and out the other side, you can pick up the B1363 which leads eventually onto the A19 York ring road - and is a cracker of a road. Great farm shop for a butty stop near the York end, too...

Add to that list almost every road in East Yorkshire, if you fancy going further afield. smile

A good run out would be Middlesbrough to Bridlington, via Helmsley and Malton.

(I used to live in Linthorpe too)

Go along the Stokesley road and onto Guisborough via Pinchinthorpe, up Birk Brow and along the A171 Whitby road for F&C. Coming out of Whitby, come along the promenade, up to Sandsend and up the big hill. Take the route back to Saltburn (think this is the A174)through Botton Village etc (some great roads around there) and then back to Boro via the short trip on the A174. I like to just drive and see where I end up really. I've found some great roads by chance along there and lots of opportunities to stop and appreciate what's around us biggrin
Happy driving/riding and stay safe

you're only 30mins (by bikebiggrin) from great roads either side of the A66 as it goes across the Pennines
(Swaledale / Wensleydale on the south side)
(Teesdale and Weardale on the north) and of course the wonderfull roads that join them;) most realy welcome bikers with some good Yorkshire Tea and sarnies

I remember doing a trip from Teesside up to Edinburgh, to Glasgow and then down the West. Such a beautiful drive.

This thread is making me want to go and get my keys and head out for a drive!!

One of the best roads in the country (my favourite)is Hartside Pass from Alston to Melmerby. There is a cafe at the top of the pass which does decent breakfasts and bacon butties which is a bonus.

I never did the West side; but the highlight of the year I spent working in Grangemouth was the drive up from Ponteland to Edinburgh on the A68 at four o'clock on a Monday morning. In the summer across the Otterburn moors the scenery was fantastic and empty roads (except for all the other contractors going to work)as far as the eye could see.

Maybe we need a North East pistonheads road trip with a stop in Edinburgh drink

You can make that an entertaining circular route by going up the A696 out of Ponty (it joins the A68 after Otterburn) then hanging a left just before Jedburgh. This takes you along the B6357 to Bonchester Bridge - some NICE tight bends! - and eventually Newcastleton. Dropping down onto the A7 at Canonbie, you turn off shortly after in Longtown, onto the thrash-tastic A6071 past Carlisle airport's back door. Through Brampton and you pick up the A69 for a speedy return to The Toon.
I haven't been up that way since early summer but there's only one speed camera, at a T-junction a couple of miles north of Ponteland. After the border it's a different story, with multitudinous scameras beloved by the Scots... almost all positioned in exactly the sort of place you'd be toeing it to get past that tractor/grandad/tourist bimbler you've been stuck behind in the twisties... banghead
