Have the road planners at Gateshead Council finally lost their minds?

On the approach to White-mare-pool roundabout where the Four aces petrol station is, they are installing a pedestrian crossing.

This is on a (once 70mph) 50 mph, dual carriageway with a pedestrian subway directly below. God help people that would rather brave 4 lanes of fast moving traffic, rather than walk through a tunnel underneath.

The approach to the lights are just after a crest, so visibility isn't great heading from Newcastle, so I'd expect a few more rear end shunts at this location to justify the reduced speed limit and cameras they installed a few years ago.

Really makes my blood boil to see idiotic ideas implemented to appease a few people that have complained that a tunnel is to scary to use.

So, my vote for most stupid bunch of cretinous morons go to Gateshead Council

I'm fairly sure that Gateshead council's mind was already well and truly lost when they worked out the traffic light sequencing for the approach to the Tyne Bridge!

I work for a business that use to be beside the tyne bridge (think Radio). when we saw the plans for the roads around the tyne bridge and quay side we could not beleive what we saw, Im sure newcastle and gateshead employ non drivers to plan roads.

and why oh why did they tale the roundabout away outside the aitkenside pub? it was great for turing round and getting onto the swing bridge?

c'mon guys, surely you realise by now that road layouts are done to Govermental instructions & policy - and that policy is to promote all other forms of transport at the expense of motoring.

so it should come as no surprise to find examples such as these.

the only way to stop it is to vote these morons out.

They always have been morons and always will be. Dont know if its true but I heard a rumour when they were designing the central motorway they outsourced the design abroad, who didnt realise we drive on the left, hence some of the sliproads join and leave from the right hand side.

Dunno how true that its, but I could well believe it.

I'm not sure that is true. My father was working for T&W transport planning at the time so I might ask him about it. From what I gather they just tried out lots of new conscepts on one relatively short stretch of road. Its clear that they didn't actually finish it either!

The junction that drops you onto the motorway southbound into the outside lane from the city centre is a particularly poorly placed junction. That said, it is a good excuse for full bore standing starts with the noise bouncing off the ceiling. smile

Oh BTW my father is also partly to blame for that ridiculous death trap bus lane next to the monument. Never quite forgiven him for that!

Along similar lines - I also heard that the man who designed the latest and most ridiculous road system in Sunderland city centre was in fact a non-driver, on loan from Newcastle council - rumours this agreement was formalised on April 1st are apparently unfounded!!

Why do our councils sanction the building of a bypass for a town in single carriageway(thinking of Riding Mill,Haltwhistle and Chilton near Ferryhill) when it's obvious that a piece of dualled road would be a better option.
I remember being involved in the Western Bypass road building scheme from the Metro Centre up past Kingston Park towards Gosforth, even then, nobody could understand WHY the new bridge over the Tyne was only two lanes wide with NO hard shoulder. If the bridges had been 'future proofed' with a extra wide hard shoulder, perhaps it was too sensible a solution.

Please tell that to the dept. of transport.

We tried telling them back in the seventies regards the York northern ring road.

A five year-old could have predicted the single carriageway snarl up. rolleyes
