Flying to newcastle and driving back to Gloucester tomorrow, picking up an old shape KA of all things for a customer of a friend - anything nearby that route that's interesting to check out and stretch the legs? I'll consider anything, cheaper the better really.

I suggest Greggs. Cheap, can stretch your legs walking to and from the shop and ya can come out with a steak bake for only 99p.

lol, well I hoped to see something I haven't seen before as I've almost never been up North; it's an excuse to check out something interesting. I hate greggs anyway..

Don't take the A1 south from the Toon, find the A19 instead. It runs parallel but is a faster road with better scenery (the cloud factories of Middlesbrough aside).
I'd go A19/ A1M/ old A1 past Doncaster/ M18/ M1/ A38 through Derby to pick up the A5 at Brownhills then drop onto the M6 north of Walsall. You're almost home smile

As for interesting things to see, you'd need longer than a day wink

Plenty of interesting roads; the only detour I can think of worth trying to slot in is to get from A19 near Middlesbrough across to Stokesley then take the road for Helmsley; from Helmsley you can go down to York and across to the A1 or via Sutton bank to rejoin the A19 near Thirsk.

Don't forget to look at that ugly bit of scrap metal called the Angel of the North...just south of the Metrocentre traffic jam. smile

Try that route, one of the best roads in the country IMO, 19 miles of lovely tarmac and a nice market town at the end for coffee.

It's quite bad for police though so mind yer speed.

Yep...to the bikers, the Yorkshire TT course. smile

Helmsley-Oswaldkirk-York (B1257/B1363) is one of my favourites too.

Hmm well these posts came a little late but i did stop for lunch by the Angel.
320 miles in total, in a Ford Ka and I have to say I really got on with it well. Brilliant handling you just wanted to take it down every windy road. Car took 35litres from reserve and didn't use it all up. Speedo overreads by as much as 8 or 9 mph so it's not as fast as it seems. The newer engine is a lot better than the old one although the transmission whines like an Anglia.
Thanks for the tips though it was a lovely area, I'd like to spend more than 30 minutes there in future..
Had a surreal feeling getting on a plane in the morning and being in the North in such a short time, and then coming back home the same day.

You don't get out much, do you? wink
I regularly drive from Teesside to places like Gloucester, Worcester, Brize Norton, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and even Belfast AND BACK in a day...

i know.. I thought that for a lorry driver (say) it isn't anything but I'm only mid 20s no reason to have shot off for miles, went to the lake district once but that's it.

I liked it, to the point I considered being a driver for a job, however if I had to do there AND back I would be pretty bored as the return leg loses the excitement :/

hehe I can be in the Lakes in little over an hour from here... know what you mean about the boredom, I'm a service engineer and the driving's only a means to an end. That snow we had a couple of weeks back, I had to go to Kilmarnock (185 miles). Left Teesside at 10 past 10 and got there at 5 to 3 in the afternoon. Then I started work for 4 hours and THEN I had to drive home...

What's really bizarre is that with time your perception of 'just round the corner' changes. I used to regularly drive 150 miles to see my then girlfriend... and if I was driving back from a job in, say, St. Austell I'd get to the M62 and be thinking I was nearly home hehe
