Try and get the car inspected by at least an independent before buying it, rear main oil seals are prone to leaking oil and if left unattended can lead to quite a nasty problem. Also intermediate shafts can go also leaving you with big bills. Basically just remember that the cars are now good value but if something goes wrong they are still a "Porsche" for repair costs.

I put the best part of 50k on my 986 and it never missed a beat my dad however owned a brand new 987 perfectly run in and never over revved and the rms and intermediate shaft went at around 25k miles. The car had just finished its extended warranty but OPC newcastle replaced the engine as he had complained from day one of knocking on the engine. I believe the fact he was an ex service manager helped towards the repair being done out of warranty. Although the engine was replaced it was actually a re conditioned unit and not a new one at a cost of £10,000 including labour. Thinking about it i would get the car inspected at a Porsche dealer as they will pick up on the smallest of problems if it means making a few quid plus being mid engined the access for you isnt the best unless you have a ramp to put it on.

Away from the negatives they are a great car, i had a trip to the south of france and monaco in convoy with my dad 2 summers ago and the car was brilliant unbelievably practical for a roadster. Make sure the cars got decent tyres on as well as they can be quite sensitive to cheap tyres and handle completely out of character, mine had mixed tyres hankooks on the front and dunlops on the rear when i bought it rolleyes and it was very snappy in the wet best are michellin pilots or pirelli p zeros or the dunlop sports i had on where quite good.

Agree totally with Toenheel. These engines were strangely designed to be out of balance, with the counterweight being the flywheel. Unfortunately, this has lead to wear on the rear bearing which in turn causes a leak at the seal. This may come to nothing but it is a sign that the engine may give in at some time. The combined effect of the engine naturally being out of balance and wear on the main bearings causes extra piston movement and liners ultimately crack near the head. This appears to be a relatively common problem, although did not happen to my 986. I looked for a 996 for some time and ended up buying a 993 after being put off by the high percentage of cars advertised with new engines. Don't assume an engine replacement is a good thing either as people have blown their replacements as well!

I would only buy one with an extended porsche warranty as normal warranties will not cover the cost of replacement and would sidestep away from any common problem anyway. Alterntively buy from a reputable Porsche specialist.

Sunday forecast suggests predominantly 'sunny' so fingers crossed then guys.

Also seen a V8 caterham _ much preferred to lightweight bike engine solutions _ noise was incredible!

Hi Alan
I have been lurking in the back ground watching your posts with interest, glad you still have the chim, I am not going with a porker afterall, as Moon Monkey commented my girth may restrict me some what.(he's a cheeky bugger, he will never see the inside of 17" shirt collar again).
Anyways, I have just dug out the photos that I took just before you collected the TIV, she is very pretty car.

I may come back into the TVR fold (never say never), if the right car comes along who knows !!.

Take care & happy New Year
