What are they like as areas to live in?

TVR safe or on bricks in the morning?

Looking to move to Newcastle shortly but don't know much about the various districts apart from Gosforth and Jesmond.

Ta.

I live in Northumberland Park which is right next to Backworth and not too far from Killingworth. We've lived there for almost 4 years and I've never had any problems and I've never heard of any bother on the estate. Got a few mates who live in Killingworth and it's a decent area to live, same goes for backworth

Dont know too much about the areas you mention, but I can tell you for a fact that in general, the areas to avoid in Newcastle are pretty much any Riverside area bar the quayside - i.e. Elswick, Benwell, Scotswood, Byker, Walker, Wallsend, and also on top of that, the Stanhope Street (Authurs Hill) area, Blakelaw, Newbiggin Hall, West Denton, Fawdon, or Cowgate.

The other areas in Newcastle are by and large pretty safe.

Not too relevant to the original question I know, but at least it gives you a list of places to avoid wink

If you mean Rakelane general hospital in North Tyneside then it's surrounded by North Shields, Whitley Bay/Whitley lodge/Tynemouth and the likes. If you mean the General Hospital in Newcastle then that's the area you want to avoid - the west end.

I lived in Backworth for a number of years.

It used to have a good pub ( now closed) and a private local members club that was OK.

Its changed a bit now and its very different to Gosforth and Jesmond !

I would recommend you have a garage.

I did enjoy my time there and made quite a few friends.

Earsdon Village is nice. Two good pubs to use if you like a 'local'. Handy for Whitley Bay too.

general hospital areas are fenham and benwell - both of which i'd stay away from. areas to avoid are, as others have said, cowgate, fenham, scotswood, benwell, byker, blakelaw.

Yes...the Duchars. I used it when it was almost derelict and only 50% of the lower room was open. The owner had one eye and the place was frequented by numerous 'characters'

It was then bought over by a family, completely refurbished and was a thriving village pub.

I spent most of my money in there, and had a number of good years. Made a load of pals in the process.

I moved away and it then closed...................Looks like I was keeping the place in business single handedly. drink

I hope they re-open and make a success of it. Its a lovely building.

I've lived in Backworth now for over a year and half and I like it.
I would recommend a garage too.
I'd look for somewhere with a garage though, quite a bit of Backworth is in a conservation area, and I believe there are plans afoot to extend its coverage.
Looks like I built my garage just in time...

As for Deuchars, it's now open for business.

Is the Duchars a Free house or is it being operated by a big name brewery ??

I may have to pop in and 'check it out' ( 'Official Visit' of course.......)biggrin

I guess Backworth is on the "up" then,
Wouldn't have lived there in my day, Deuchar back in the 60's & 70's looked a great building full of local mafia

One thing I forgot to mention about Backworth is the road that runs to Earsdon is plaugued with speed bumps, but at least they're the 'cushion' type which isn't too bad.

Thanks for the local info.

I'll take a look around next week when I'm next in Newcastle.
