Can anyone point me in the direction of the best roads in the North East? Iv had my VX220 for nearly two yeas and Iv never made an effort to find the best place to stretch its legs!

Shhhush

They won't be nice roads now because there'll be too many cars trying to enjoy them.

The decent local roads are widely published anyway so I don't see any issue in repeating them.

FWIW my current favourite route is to head out to Derwent Resevoir, then take the B6278 form Edmundbyers down to Stanhope over the moors. From Stanhope, I head to Alston on the A689. From Alton, pick up the A686 Hartside pass and head South West to Melmerby and then do a U-turn and head back up to the top of Hartside (heading up hill on this stretch is probably my favourite short section of road anywhere in the UK). From here I go back down the A686 back to the A69 at Hayden Bridge. From there I normally just head back to Newcastle but there is of course the military road on the other side of the Tyne valley.

I think what bob meant was get an atlas, and try some. Weardale, Teesdale, North Yorkshire Moors, Northumbria, all house some fantastic driving. I spent the whole weekend in the moors and discovered a few gems and some corners that made me want to go back for another try.

In a proper car they are all 100's of times better. Happy hunting.

I do this route but after turning right onto the B6278 I hang a left towards barnard castle, there are a brilliant 10 miles on smaller roads, would be great in a VX.
I then turn right and pick up the signs for Alston, head over Hartside but continue all the way to Penrith for a pie!
I then U-turn, back over Hartside (even better heading east).
When I get back to Alston I go striaght on and head for Hexham.
At Hexham I turn right and head back towards Edmunbuyers.
Great roads and usually not too busy, minimal police and a few other P'headers blasting about.
Enjoy!!

Cheers,

Richard.

Without giving specifics away, there's a whole load of decent roads to the north west of Newcastle, you dont need to travel far, head to the airport and then there's a whole world of hidden gems within a 5 mile (or so) radius.
Keeps me amused many a Sunday afternoon (especially in the summer) driving

Cheers fellas,

I have been out and about a little bit and I have done one track day so far (Elvington) so the car isn’t solely being used as a fancy looking commuting machine its just I haven’t fully explored the best roads.

Pistonheads ran an article a little while back detailing the best roads in the UK which had me wondering if there was a collection exclusive to the NE.

Definitely should arrange a NE hoon oot! Even during the winter months if the roads are clear. We’ll see how much faster that badge makes SeanyD’s car go ; )

Chris, I'll happily follow you to the garage to drop yours off to be fixed afterwards, if we do have a run out. beer

Haha, I should have enough change in my pocket to fix any issues.

Should the Lotus go wrong maybe we should swing by a couple of loan sharks?

Luckily my diesel shopping trolley doesn't suffer from the wet roads so I'd be up for joining one. I need some inspiration to buy a proper car again.

That goes without saying!

First off though, if people could give me some kind of idea about when they'd want to go... I was originally thinking of arranging one after the new year, but if there is enough interest, I'd be happy to get to arrange something before xmas.
