.....if not why does everyone drive so fkING SLOW through it? I have been down to 20mph the last 4 times, with a superbike in front weaving to stop stalling.

There is not speed cameras as such but there are cameras monitoring the traffic flow and speed and under the bylaws your can be prosecuted for speeding if it is deemed excessive.

Who decided to make it 2 single lanes?

Was it built for horse drawn carriages or something?

I'm looking at moving to Newcastle shortly but working South of the Tyne.

As the tunnel is so congested in the mornings I can't even think about moving to the NE side of town.

Even coming down the A1 from the West is not good.

It was completed 40 years ago when traffic was a hell of a lot lighter than it is now. Construction on the second Tyne Tunnel is due to start next year.

Where are you working? I live in Whitley Bay and use the Swing Bridge to get to Gateshead Stadium area. Traffic is not normally too bad. Takes 30 - 40mins for 11 miles. Would avoid the Tyne Tunnel like the plague unless you can travel off peak.

Working in Middlesbrough 2-3 days and Newcastle 1-2 days per week.

What's the swing bridge?

Is it toll or free?

Yes we started on the temporary works 4 weeks ago, so the traffic will get a lot worse before it gets better, dont worry only about 4yrs to complete the new crossing

There's also the (in order - closer to the tunnel) tyne bride then swing bridge, then redheugh bridge then scotswood bridge, all before the A1.

I'd probably still be tempted to go A1 unless you can be bothered to get through town at that time, in which case redheugh bridge then A1 is probably shortest.

I think if I lived in Newcastle itself, I'd do Swing Bridge, Felling Bypass, then A19 down to 'Boro, seems to avoid most of the worst traffic.

I live in cental newcastle at do.. Tyne bridge, felling bypass, then A19. Its fine at 7ish when I cross the bridge but any later and it turns into a carpark. So i suppose the time you leaving for work will have a big effect which way you go.
