Are there speed cameras through the Tyne Tunnel?.........
Discussion
Who decided to make it 2 single lanes?
Was it built for horse drawn carriages or something?
I'm looking at moving to Newcastle shortly but working South of the Tyne.
As the tunnel is so congested in the mornings I can't even think about moving to the NE side of town.
Even coming down the A1 from the West is not good.

It was completed 40 years ago when traffic was a hell of a lot lighter than it is now. Construction on the second Tyne Tunnel is due to start next year. Was it built for horse drawn carriages or something?

Where are you working? I live in Whitley Bay and use the Swing Bridge to get to Gateshead Stadium area. Traffic is not normally too bad. Takes 30 - 40mins for 11 miles. Would avoid the Tyne Tunnel like the plague unless you can travel off peak. Was it built for horse drawn carriages or something?

So what's traffic like across it at 8 - 8.30 in the morning?
Is it a do able commute to M'bro?
Anyone doing similar commutes from Newcastle?
There's also the (in order - closer to the tunnel) tyne bride then swing bridge, then redheugh bridge then scotswood bridge, all before the A1.Is it a do able commute to M'bro?
Anyone doing similar commutes from Newcastle?
I'd probably still be tempted to go A1 unless you can be bothered to get through town at that time, in which case redheugh bridge then A1 is probably shortest.
