A complete prat in a silver 3 series BMW overtook me on Gosforth high street this evening, in a massive slow traffic jam while i was happily idling along in 1st saving the clutch, rapidly flashed, horned and gave him the two fingered salute and re-overtook him. If your on this site your a pr++k and should maybe pay attention to the traffic conditions.

Why do people flash you when you overtake them?

Some are flashing you back in, most are flashing you because their driving skills don't extend to a safe overtake of slower traffic.

Spot on. smile
A lot of folk assume that you're as useless a driver as they are, and incapable of using the vehicle's full performance without hitting something.
It's called 'making progress'.

My 'favourite' is the dorks who brake when something like a big truck comes towards them, perhaps from round a bend, but perfectly safely.
If they are that nervous, then they're a danger to both themselves and others.

Agreed, I performed several perfectly legitamate overtakes on saturday during run to scarborough. Most were greeted with flashing lights, shook heads, or the vinegar on my chips wave. Others were blocked by drivers closing the gap in front of them or positioning their car badly.

However I did thank the 3 drivers who did slow down at the start of clear straights to allow me to overtake safely, surely the kind of awareness of others that makes a slower driver safe and what we would do if caught by a quicker driver.
