Newcastle area - new gearbox for Mk 3 VW Golf 1.6

Dear Newcastle VW owners - HELP PLS. My 2 sons are at University in Newcastle. One of them has been told his 1999 VW Golf 1.6 (only 60k miles!!!) needs a new gearbox and has been quoted (in my words) an astronomical price - indeed I think the garage may have caused the problem).
So, does any one know of a reputable VW greabox specialist who can fit a recon box and clutch whereby I do not have to increase my mortage. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me.

A couple of good options.
1) Pitstop garages are a VW specialist and are pretty good. Worth having a chat with them and seeing what they can offer.

2) The other option is to give Veedubs scrapyard in Bill quay a call and see if they have a box and pay somebody else to fit it. A guy called Graham at Crown garages in Jesmond fitted a replacement box in my polo for £100. I'm not 100% certain that he's still in business though.

As someone mentioned above, Vee Dubs is a breakers that is good for parts.
Also just down the road from there is MB Motorsport. They are VW (golf mainly) specialists. They are really good and don't rip you off. I've been going to them since i got my Golf as have all my mates with VW's. They re-did my head gasket and loads of other work.

They came second in the Brotish Rally cross in a Audi TT they built.
Very friendly blokes too!
