MIG welding is what you need ( unless you are skilled in Low current elec arc welding).

Depends what you are doing.

What are you trying to do? No offence mate but have you welded before? It doesn't sound like it as you wouldn't be asking these questions. What ever it is you are doing I would go to a local fab. shop and get them to do it

welding 4 or 5 mm is a piece of pee with any type of welding..... its only the thinner stuff......1mm -2mm you need to use somet like tig or oxy-acetlyn blow torch.

if your using mig (gun with a button that feeds filler rod automatically) test on a peice till you hear the sound a 'bee makes'....if you smell bacon or start holing then lower your current

stick weldiong depends on thickness of rod.....ad use 2.5mm rods for stick low current..... thicker rods can use higher current but you have to work fast to get a decent finish#

orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr get a pro to do it.

or tell me what you need doing, i might be able to help you.... email me if you like

Take it from an expert....bread buns and brown sauce. Non of this common tomato stuff.

Bacon Bun in one hand, coffee (or tea) in the other.

plasma welders are like 25k for a fixed unit....mobile units 37k.... you not mean a plasma cutter(manual arc cutter)?? or gas burning torch ??

ex welder fabricator here....

a mig is fine for welding skips....150 amp would do but go for bigger as it will have a better duty cycle....plus it will let you weld down to 1mm (car body) if you go too big it wont go down low enough...oo-er...and make sure it takes a 15kg spool of mig wire...it works out a lot cheaper than 5kg spools...!

as for gas you are better off with argoshield...available from BOC in Birtley or Air Suppplies down team valley....some people just use Co2 but it gives a crap finish!!!...plus you can use stainless mig wire with helishield gas for welding stainless....

Hope that helps...
