Is there anyone locally I can talk to who would help me get an efficient set up in my car with a bit more bass? I'm no expert so they would have to speak veeerry slooowwly and point a lot. I also can't spend too much, although obviously Christams is coming up!

My car is mid engined with a flashy looking, although mediocre sounding Alpine 6 speaker system (mids in dash, tweeters and some bigger non-descript items in the doors). There are unused pods in the rear bulkhead and I did buy some quality Alpine mid-bass units to fill them, but I'm not sure if it's worth it as they just talk to the seat backs. I was thinking about fitting an amp to power them, but the battery is in the boot, presume that would mean lots of backwards/forwards wiring???

There is next to no space for a powered sub internally except for a possibility of fitting one in the passenger footwell. The best thing I did was to fit my wifes Sony MP3 player which had a very simple 3 band equalizer and allowed the front mids to be toned down a bit. She has seized it back for her new car but I should have one under the tree shortly.

Janitor has done some great fitting guides. Here's his take on ICE...http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=283482&hw=janitor

HTH. (am liking the Esprit BTW).

Pop in and speak to Monty at http://www.bassmechanix.com

I work in the same industrial estate and even though they get a lot of Chavvy stuff in from boy racer types, they work with vovlo, audi, Mercedes main dealers etc in Newcastle, installing audio/visual/sat nav stuff. I'm sure if you popped in, someone could advise on the best and most cost effective solution within your price range.

PS. its directly opposite AAS exhausts

The Esprit always was a pain to fit audio to. I'm sure the factory started by installing the speakers just below the windscreen and built the car around them!
As it happens fitting the speakers behind the seats wouldn't be TOO much of an issue as all you're after is the bass. This is non-directional so in effect the speakers could be anywhere (see domestic subwoofers), all you're trying to do is move air. If you could find a way to do it, you could have them in the front boot firing down into the footwells. At least the front boot would act somewhat like an infinite baffle enclosure (ie a sealed box!) whereas most installs behind the seats have the speaker cones bouncing in the emptiness of the engine bay, less than ideal reinforcement to the sound.
As an aside, I've always thought that someone should reintroduce the roof console for housing audio equipment (like the old Essex Turbo cars) - modern kit is much more compact than the Panasonic gear that Lotus used back then.

Thanks, great write up too. I know it will never sound brilliant as its such a small space (the family Volvo sounds like the Albert Hall with standard kit) but there's room for improvement for sure.
