On the A1231 westbound on the outskirts of Washington about half a mile west of the A19 crossover (just before sliproad for Nissan & Pattinson ind.est) there is a layby where very often there is parked without any occupant (at least in the cab)a white Renault Traffic or Vauxhall Vivaro van with chevrons covering the back doors and no other sineage.
Does anyone have any idea what it does? Camera van? ANPR? or DVLA perhaps?

These are vans with ANPR (auto numberplate recognition), they have poped up everywhere in the last week due to the recent security alerts. You will see the same van / or a volvo traffic care parked on the A1 at washington services most mornings. These do not (should not) record your speed.

Possibly true, but the van in question always has its rear doors closed and doesnt have any slots for a camera to see through, and has been parking in the layby long before the recent security alerts.

Camera could be in the back of the van looking through the windscreen.

Unusual, but not impossible.

Beware of these vans! I found to my cost that what I thought that was only a number plate recognition van was in fact a speed camera van. It was just over a week ago that I was travelling into work along the A177 into Stockton. I join this road at the junction from Billingham opposite Torpe Thewles after the fixed speed camera. I proceeded to overtake two slower moving vehicles and hit 69mph in a 60mph zone. Pulled in straight after overtaking and went back to 60. As I approached the top of the hill spotted behind the trees in a layby a white van with chevrons across the back and two cameras poking out the back. As I went past I did think about what type of van it was. Needless to say just over a week later the NIP arrived.

So anyone who travels in to Stockton from Sedgefield (or out) beware of THE van! I spotted it again on Friday in the same spot partly hidden by the trees. It would seem as though this has become their favourite new spot to catch people. Anyone joining the road at the same junction as me should also watch out as there are no speed camera signs from where we join the road.

Er... not quite. I was tipped off by a Trafpol from Cleveland Police m/cycles division that they would hide there so they can watch and time traffic through the trees. In 1990.

Bloomin eck.. I would have only been eleven in 1990 lol. Having drive down that road from Mon - Fri for the past six years I could probably count the number of times I have seen a van there on one hand. The majority of those being from the past few weeks. frown

Scamera vans are rarely out much past 4pm (4.30 if they're on overtime!) so maybe you miss them?

I agree that I have seen them early in the morning i.e. before 8 in the morning. I also saw one last week on Monday night at half five in the same place. So I guess someone must be on overtime.
