My McAfee Virus thing has now expired.

Do I :~

renew it at a cost

OR,

Get some free stuff on the Net ??

Whats the best thing to do to protect my computer ??

(I'm not a Techno-Geek type, so please bear that in mind. I struggle to do most copmuter related stuff)

Thanks,

Depends on how much porn you're downloading as to what type of virus you are prone to receive. Give us a bit more info.

The free download stuff generally aint as safe as spending 30 quid on a new Macafee.

Actually, the free download stuff is as good.

AVG (linked above) lacks some of the higher up functions of expensive virus programs like McAffee (such as heuristic detection - which means that the virus is detected BEFORE it hits your computer) but on the plus side it is a small, quick program and as long as you don't go downloading vast amounts of porn/"free" software you should be fine.

If this doesnt seem good enough, there's Avast!, which does have heuristic detection but at the expense of some speed. This loss of speed would also happen if you had McAffee/Norton/whatever.

To put it in perspective, everyone I know in IT uses Avast. It's updated regularly, and has all the features of the more expensive programs without the price. It also doesn't try and take over your computer with all kinds of random nanny protection programs to filter your emails/stop you doing whatever, which the more expensive programs do.

Hope this helps

Nowt wrong with AVG free at all. I use the excellent Sygate Personal Firewall too (not sure if that hasn't been quoshed by Symantec though).

Avast ground my machine to a halt, so I got rid straight away.

You don't have to. However, I did remove McAfee (or at least I think I did) and noticed a distinct improvement in the speed the PC does stuff.

Its not good practice to run to AV programs, so I would say remove mcafee if you are running avast or AVG. In time it will become pretty useless anyway without regular updates.

edited to add: and I have also ditched symantec corporate for AVGfree, seen no issues as yet but of course my home network is behind a firewalled router.

So does the Avast program have a 'firewall' ??

As has already been said, it's really not a good idea to run more than one antivirus program at a time.

I use both AVG and Avast (on two different machines). Both good, but have come down on AVG side.

neither have let me down so far. Just make sure you allow them to update themselves on a regular basis.

If you need any PC help just let me know (it's what I do)......

Nope, but the one that comes with Windows is pretty much good enough. Otherwise google around for Sygate Personal Firewall, as mentioned above. It's not being updated any more (damn you Symantec for buying them out) but it is a very effective firewall program for a standalone computer.

I've been nominated as the guarantor for the beer tokens. If you just pass all the £20s to me, I will gladly confirm their authenticity and hold onto them for safe keeping drunk

Guys, I'm having a tough enough time at the moment with bloody cars, let alone handing out beer tokens! Yesterday was the suzuki swift dabacle and today I had to travel behind mrs zebs who was in the liz while I tried to keep up in a smart roadster.

Have some heart.....show some sympathy......how do you all sleep at night?

hi all...

Bit late i know but i have got corporate edition of symantec anti virus....you can update it as often as you want and it doesnt expire. it is definately one of the best you can get!!!

Drop me a mail if anyone needs a copy.

Also do yourself a favour and download mozilla firefox.

Most virus are written to exploit microsoft internet explorer....switch to firrefox and you stand a lot less chance of getting a virus.

Geek head off now and going back to working on the Chim....
