Will be moving up to your region shortly so I'd be interested to hear where the nice places to live are.

Need good schools (private or state) and no chavs within several miles at least thanks.

Looking at buying 4-5 bed detached with double garage. Budget possibly up to £450,000.

Best location around south of Newcastle to Middlesbrough.

Listen out for a Tamora - she'll be looking for company.

Hi Richard,

Plenty to choose from with that sort of budget.

I'd try Winyard. Just off the A19 at Wolvistoon junction A689. 5 minutes from A1M. Very well to do area with plenty of houses of similar value and not a chav in site.
Because of the popularity of this estate there must be plenty of decent schools in the area.

People who have lived there that i knopw of are Sir John Hall, Kevin Phillips and plenty of other big money makers who undoubtedly could of had the pick of where they wanted to live.

Good Luck.

Also try Yarm which is an old Market Town with fantastic restuarants and bars and also a river running through so some good beer gardens for the summer. Quite a well to do area with some very good schools.

Ive just moved from there but I think it would be an ideal place to look with your budget. Good access to the A19 and has a station etc which runs into most of the main stations.

So are you looking for rural or urban? Some fantastic properties in the countryside yet ony 10-15 minutes off the main A1 or A19 routes.

Another thumbs up to Yarm thumbup

Voted Britains best High Street. Lots of individual shops, bars, resturants etc. Also got the best schools in the area, both private and state. Good acess to the A19 and amazing roads and scenery.

I moved up from Oxford to the North East and decided on Yarm about 7 years ago. Well worth adding to your list of places to look.

Wynyard has some nice houses, but its a bit 'Footballer's Wives' and soulless, just a big housing estate really.

Where ever you you decide, I am sure you will enjoy the North East. We have some lovely roads round here to enjoy.

Kevin Phillips used to live just outside Bishop Auckland on the way to Crook, up on the hill behind the guy who owns Chicken Scaffolding, fantastic views. Winyard is nice, I would also recommend a look around a place called High General Whoo, just off the A1 Washington Area, all lovely houses and within easy drivining distance to both the A1 and A19.

Thanks for the replies - very helpful.

Planning a weekend exploring soon.

Is there a local property paper that I should look out for and which estate agent would anyone recommend for the best choice of house?

Ta.

Theres Cleadon Village that has a very good village primary school. Good transport links to eveywhere. Most of the small villages in Durham are ok, but have some very very good driving roads. Yarm is very nice. Washington Old Village is nice. I would stay away from Wynyard as its very very footballers wives.

And there is the Journal homefinder but I don't know how far south that goes. Best bet is to look on rightmove.co.uk

Wynyard? Nooooooooooo! Don't do it - not if you're a thinking person anyway.
I hear that you are not allowed to hang out laundry/ work on your car/ play noisily with yourr kids/ have a party without consulting the estate management/ pay ridiculous fees for estate maintenance.

So a TVR would probably get you an instant red card...

Here's a few estate agents in Yarm:

Roseberry Group: http://www.roseberrygroup.co.uk/new_house/newhouse...
Homes & Finance: http://www.homesandfinance.co.uk/index.htm
Michael Poole: http://www.michaelpoole.co.uk/page/search.asp
Browns: http://www.brownsestateagency.co.uk/property-searc...

I am sure someothers will be along with other agents in different areas.

Apart from the fact that most of the houses are built from snot & used bog rolls. Big price does not equal quality wink

Possibly a little too far south but there are some beautiful villages just south of Boro round Great Ayton and Stokesley. Worth a sniff about IMO.

Thanks.

Looks like Yarm is quite a favourite.

I'll take a look tomorrow to see if Tammy will like it there (and the family lol).

Indeed Yarms a little gem. I spent a good many years living there and it is a lovely little place..
Good pubs, good restaurants, nice looking busy cobbled high street... I loved it.

Great Ayton/Great Broughton/Stokesley have some lovely spots too, beautiful scenery, especially along the A172 villages - Carlton/Swainby way, they are utterly stunning & charming village houses. Last time I looked though, they were expensive, worth a look though.

There are plenty of small villages as mentioned along the A1 and A19 between Boro and Newcastle too, but I personally despise Wynyard.... Very dry and pretentious place, very footballers wives, and in my opinion, just big houses void of any character and style..

Good luck!

The Black Horse at Swainby does some really good food, so if you fancy a drive out for something to eat, I can recommend it.

Most places in the North East have something to recommend them, except for Sunderland of course!

I'd stay clear of anything as far south as Yarm or Boro... they talk funny.

Personally I'd head west of Newcastle and/or just south of there. Some lovely little villages or slightly bigger towns, and you are close enough to Newcastle for the schools. Zebra probably knows his way around those parts better than most.
