Saw the panic about the bad fuel on Sky TV.

Anyone picked up any 'bad gear' in the North East region yet ??

Possibly picked some up in Tadcaster, not really the North East I know. Car was spluttering straight after filling, knocked the boost down as it was detting like mad. limped it all the way up to the Chester Le Street Turnoff of the A1m where it conked out 2 miles from home.
Made for a very interesting breakdown recovery considering it's got 1 towing eye (tie down strap really) which is hidden beneath the chin spoiler. Thankfully the guys at Fred Henderson were great, whipped off the chin spoiler, called the low loader (which i asked for in the first place but my insurance co. don't do requests it seems), and bricked themselves trying to get it onto the lowloader, it's not a breakdown freindly car hehe

Could be something else, not sure yet, but it coincided with a fill up of 99RON which it normally runs peachy on. Has had one or two other wee probs lately so I'm not casting the blame just yet.
Not bothered, it's officially now off the road for it's new engine, brakes, clutch, diff and more to get her ready and working in time for LM cloud9

Shouldn't be a problem from what's been said so far in my opinion.

It will all come out in the wash as the next few days unfold I expect, but it seems fairly confined to the south. That said, there's been a couple of reports of it from the north according to the BBC. Guess we'll see how it pans out.

nicked from the bbc website, showing where reports of people getting problems are coming in from.
Not quite as south east focussed as expected, but still the majority are down there

teacherits a myth....! supermarkets do not have a cheap low grade fuel, shell/bp/tescos/asda/etc etc, all come from the same refinery/storage facillity. in teeside most comes from petroplus at seal sands. which is only a storage/distrabution facillity, which has it delivered by rail. some is trunked up, like LPG from the cracker plant at immingham. and all tankers who's ever name is on the side fill up on the same rack, from the same storage. even yer fancy super+ which everbrand, is standard U/L , with a addative pack added at the petrol station. hope this is helpful, and shouldn't worry about the differance between asda and shell, cos there isn't one. though shell would like to think there is so they can charge you more!!!!!!

Sorry, you were onto a winner there but you blew it with the generalisation. The 95 RON's this is quite often true for ( well known that a lot of supermarkets buy their base 95 RON from the likes of JET, Shell and so on), but for the Premium ones, nope.
The crappy supermarket SUL's, like Asda and Sainsbury's use any old muck, BP, Esso, Shell etc, whoever is supplying the goods cheapest and easiest. But with the big 3 SUL's you couldn't be farther from the truth.
Tesco 99 ron and morrisons super are supplied by Greenergy. Greenergy do not use the additive packs to boost the RON (which is a crud number to gauge petrol by anyway) as esso or bp for example. They use upto 5% bioethanol to increase the octane rating. The only additive packs included are detergents etc. So they certainly aren't the same.

Shell are the only truly unique in house made SUL, which uses an additive compound pack exlusive to them. If you think they're the same as every other SUL you're mistaken.
As far as I'm aware, Tesco are the sole reseller of Greenergy's 99 Ron variant, where morrisons get their 95 and 97 from Greenergy.
As you said, supermarkets don't have cheap crappy fuel, all fuel must meet a minimum set of criteria / standards before it can be sold. However, what combination of addatives are added is entirely down to them, hence it's very rare that say sainsbury's 95 RON and Esso 95 RON are exactly the same.
Simple Chemical testing proves just how different they are, a quick sample sent to FAMM or any other fuel analysis lab will reveal this, and has, and it's been common knowledge for a long time. Most of the 95's are on par, despite slight differences in it's additive packs. As said higher end SUL's are very different though, most people with cars like mine can tell what fuel they're running on just by the engine's behaviour. Mine loves Optimax/v-power, not quite so good on 99 RON but still v. good, BP ultimate it runs awfully on.
Loads of magazines (which i'll point out now aren't my information source, I work in the Oil and Petroleum industry) have ran independant tests on various cars, and have noted quite varied results across the range. V-power tends to come top of the list, and Tesco 99 RON SUL not far behind.
With regards to the current glitch, i'll put money on it being water, silicone, or tank cleaning chemicals being present in the fuel of those effected. Most likely the latter 2 of the 3 if it's o2 sensors that are going.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Stu.
